Our Memories in Year 5
Take a look at some of the best bits in Year 5. We have taken so many pictures during our time together so it was difficult to choose the best bits. I love the group ones where you are all smiling so I hope all of these pictures put a smile on your face. My favourite pictures ever, of course, are all of us together! RE – Stewards of God’s Creation
This week, I would like you to all be co-creators and stewards of God’s creation. This was Gabriel’s idea and I love it – so thank you Gabriel! Do something this week that is a true act of kindness or something that really looks after the wonderful world we live in.
Perhaps you could even do one of each per day. I would love to hear about how you are being stewards of God’s creation this week so please do let me know!
Then, create a poster about the importance of caring for God’s creation that you could share with someone. Send me your posters – I can’t wait to see them!
Prayer
Set up a prayer corner for the last 2 weeks of Year 5. Use this special space you create as a place you can go to to reflect on all that you have achieved this year, to say thank you to God for what you are grateful for and also for your own prayer intentions. You all created really lovely prayer tables for May, the month of Mary, so I would love to see your prayer tables for the last two weeks. We are in ordinary time so the main colour could be green but this is your prayer corner so you can do whatever you choose.
I am grateful for having such a lovely class and for being able to teach you all. I am grateful that you are all safe and well at home. I am also grateful for my family and friends.
Here are some of your prayer tables from the month of May to perhaps inspire your own prayer corners this week.
Here is a special prayer you can say together with your families as we come to the end of another academic year.

Travel Agent Challenge
with Science, Geography, MFL, Computing, Maths & English links…
This week, I would like you to work on a special project that will cover a range of subjects including Maths, English Geography, Science, Computing and even MFL! It is a really exciting and fun project… you are going to become a travel agent and plan a holiday for the Anderson family! Take your time on this project. You could spend an hour a day working on it or you could spend 2/3 full afternoons working on it. Whatever you choose! Click on the button below to read your brief:
Year 5 Travel Agent Challenge** Please remember that the Anderson family are a made up family as is the holiday you are a planning.
Please remember to use the internet safely. “STOP, BLOCK & TELL!”
For this challenge, you will begin with thinking about the destination for the Andreson family holiday. Where should they go? Remember, the budget is £5000 so try and stick to this but it really doesn’t matter if you go over the budget as this a ‘make believe’ holiday. You could even go crazy and plan the biggest holiday ever!!!
Once you have decided on your destination, you need to think of the method of travel. For example, if you decide to go to Paris, you could get the Eurostar train but if you would like to go to Brazil or Australia, you would need to take a flight on an aeroplane. You can use travel sites to search flights/trains etc. if you search the travel sites this is safe. Once you have found the travel method and the times/flights etc. just simply close the browser/tab.
Remember, they need somewhere to stay – will they stay in a villa, a hotel, perhaps a camp site? If you decide on a camping holiday, the family will also need to purchase camping equipment!
Science/Geography
Then, the Anderson family simply want to know more about their destination. Research the wildlife in the area, the weather/climate, the population, neighbouring countries, how close it is to the equator and any interesting facts about the location!
MFL
How will the Anderson family enjoy their holiday if they can’t speak the language? Create some language prompts for the country you have decided on the destination for the holiday. This should include greetings, “my name is..” etc. anything you think they would need to say on holiday.
Finally, are there any really fun activities that the Anderson family could do whilst on holiday? Give the family details about this.
Please spend more time on researching information on the destination of the holiday. The travel method etc isn’t the most important thing about this project.
You can then present the whole holiday offer to the Anderson family in any way you choose – a PowerPoint, leaflet, travel brochure, letter. You choose! Happy holiday planning!
Week 15: W/C 29th June
A big hello to you all! The weeks are really flying by aren’t they?! Can you believe this is your 15th week of home learning? Whilst these have been really challenging, tricky times, I hope you are enjoying the precious family time! Weren’t we lucky with the weather last week?! It was SCORCHING!!!! I hope you all kept safe in the sun and wore sun cream and a sun hat. I heard from so many of you about lovely trips out, be it to the beach, waterfalls, parks! It has been so lovely to hear about what you’ve all been getting up to on your weekends and afternoons!
Shout outs to Maxwell, Ned, Sophie, Oliver, Eloise, Will, Jessica and Brody as they have all ready stood out this week for their fantastic writing! Well done! A special shout out this week to Jack and Molly for their FANTASTIC Wednesday challenges! They were both super creative and I was so pleased that their ideas linked so well together! Here are some highlights from Wednesday’s challenges….
Really make every moment count in these last few weeks – work as hard as you can because it will really help you as you move into Year 6! I can’t believe you are all going to be in Year 6. It feels like yesterday that you all started Year 5! I have LOVED teaching you all. You have definitely been a class I will remember forever!!
This week, there are some lovely activities for you to work on. Scroll down to the bottom of the week to find an extra special Science task – I hope you enjoy it! As always, please send me messages on Showbie – I love hearing from you all! Sorry if I’m sometimes not as quick to respond as usual as I am busy behind the scenes preparing transition plans for the school.
Have a lovely week. Sending you all a big smile!! Keep an eye on Showbie on Monday morning for a special surprise….
Lots of love! God bless!

I hope you have been enjoying learning about Judaism. I’ve been really pleased with all the work you’ve been sending me. This week, I would like you to learn more about Hanukkah – the Jewish “Festival of Light”. Some of you may already know a little about this because of one of the grid tasks. Learn the story of Hanukkah, complete a reading comprehension and then colour in your own Menorah. The Menorah is the special set of candles that you see.
Find out the answers to the questions below:

Family Lockdown Squares LetterHopefully you have all seen the letter from Mrs Ward that was sent to your parents about creating a family lockdown square. I would love all of Year 5 to be part of this project so this week, DT is focused on this!
As a school community we have spent a lot of unexpected time apart and it may be a
little longer before we are all back together as a school again.
We thought it would be lovely to make a commemorative piece as a school to
remember this time and to celebrate when we can finally gather together in full
again. The finished piece will be displayed in the ICT suite.
We would like to invite all staff and families to make a ‘lockdown square’. This is a
way for you to capture what this time has meant for you as a family. You could make
one square as a family or you may prefer to make one square per child in your
family. It’s up to you to choose.
It would be fantastic if you could make a fabric collage or use fabric paints, felt letters
and shapes, wool, threads, cross stitch, old socks (clean!) jeans, t-shirts, pillow
cases, even your St Joseph’s jumper that you might have outgrown, to make your
fabric square.
I would love to fill our shout out page with all of your family lockdown squares so please send me your creations as well as following the instructions on the letter.
Please return your completed family square (with your family name and children’s class details on the back) to school by Friday 10th July.

Last week, you explored the symbols of the Jewish faith so hopefully you have a better understanding of these. Perhaps you have even started to identify similarities between Judaism and our faith, Christianity. This week, we are exploring the place of worship for Judaism and one of the symbols of the faith in more detail.
Task 1: To show an understanding of the Jewish place of worship.
In our faith, our place of worship is a church. In Judaism, the place of worship is a synagogue. Read the PowerPoint about the Jewish place of worship and then complete both worksheets. Remember to send me your work on Showbie.
Synagogue – PowerPoint Task 1: Places of Worship – Synagogue Task 2: What is a synagogue?
Here is the synagogue we were set to visit before school closed. Take a look and see if you learn anything new about Judaism on their website.
Task 2: To understand the importance of the Mezuzah in Judaism.
A Mezuzah is a parchment inscribed with religious texts and attached in a case to the doorpost of a Jewish house as a sign of faith. Read more about this symbol of Judaism and then create your own Mezuzah.

Week 12: W/C 8th June
Hello my lovely Year 5s! You started your last half term in Year 5 with a BANG! You all worked so hard and I have really enjoyed receiving all your messages and work on Showbie. There was a particular theme this week as everyone seemed to have their creative writing hats on. A big shout out to Lewis, Christopher, Eve, Sophie, Jake and Dominic for their fantastic creative writing! I have been blown away by your fantastic efforts! Another shout out to Gabriel and Eve (again!!) for their fantastic efforts on Spelling Shed and Mathletics. Also, a huge shout out to key worker children in Year 5 (Marcus, Amy & Alice) who have been brilliant this week and working hard even when they couldn’t get in touch with me on Showbie! Well done guys! Please remember to check the Shout Out page to see more of what Year 5 have been up to – you are all working so hard and I think it is nice for you to see that all your class mates are working hard too and that you’re not the only one.
This week, we begin our brand new topic of the Vikings & Anglo Saxons. This will be our last topic together in Year 5 so I hope you enjoy!
This week, I have celebrated one year until my very special wedding day. It’s so lovely to have something exciting to look forward to and I am counting down the days now until I get married. I’d love to know what you’re looking forward to in the future? Let me know on Showbie!

RE – Other Faiths
We move on to our new topic of RE this half term which focuses on Other Faiths – specifically Judaism. As you know we were all set to visit a synagogue before schools closed so I will try to bring as much of this experience to you if I can.
This week, I would like you to explore all of the other faiths in the world. We live in a world full of diversity, culture and we know at St Joseph’s that we love celebrating each other’s differences. A world where we are all the same would be extremely boring!
We are taught to treat one another as we would like to be treated and to love our neighbours as ourselves. Whilst you are learning about other faiths and religions in the world, thank God for the wonderful diverse world he created.
Task 1: Celebrate your diversity and what makes you YOU!
I would love you to create something that shows all of the wonderful things about you. Perhaps these are things that are different to others and and these are the things that make you unique, that make you special and that make you YOU! You can present this in any way but I here’s mine as an example.
Task 2: Learn about the world religions
Complete these word searches to develop vocabulary for this new topic.
World Religion Wordsearch World Religion Tolerance WordsearchWhat is the ‘Shared Value’? Find out below and then let me know on Showbie…
I wanted to share the picture below as it shows that no matter the religion, we are all taught something similar. I’d love it if you can read about the ‘shared value’ in the picture below and then tell me what you think the shared value that all religions share.
PSHE
This week in PSHE, I would like you to learn more about one of the British Values called ‘Tolerance’. This links really well with our RE topic as we learn about people of other faiths that may believe in different things compared to what we believe in.
Tolerance – Keeping an open mind PPT
Your Task – Showing Respect & Love to All
Look at the PowerPoint above and learn more about the British Value ‘Tolerance’ then create something – this could be abstract artwork, a poster, a poem…to show how we can respect those that are different to us. Present this in any way you choose.
English – Leeds Children’s Mayor Project
I have a very special home learning project for you this week! It is to work on your very own manifesto to be entered into becoming the next Leeds Children’s Mayor!
- Leeds Children’s Mayor
- 2019 Winner – Wania
I suggest watching this video from Wania, the 2019 winner who became this year’s Children’s Mayor for Leeds.
To enter the Leeds Children’s Mayor project, you need to come up with a low cost/no cost idea that will make your school, community and Leeds a more child friendly place.
Here are some resources that may help you.
Leeds Children’s Mayor – Information for Pupils Leeds Children’s Mayor – 2019 Winning Manifesto (Wania)
If you would like more information, you could visit the websites below.
Breeze Leeds Website: Leeds Children’s Mayor Leeds for Learning Website: Leeds Children’s MayorOnce you have thought of your low cost/no cost idea, you will need to complete your manifesto. This is a word document you can write straight on to.
Download the LCM manifesto template here.
The deadline for your manifesto is Monday 15th June. Please send your completed manifestos to me on Showbie by this date.
Due to coronavirus, the entry process has changed slightly. Usually, the whole class would vote for the manifesto they want to be submitted but this year, I will choose three entries to be submitted. The Leeds Children’s Mayor team will then choose one manifesto to be the entrant from St Joseph’s.
I hope you enjoy this project!! If you want to talk to me more about it over the phone, drop me a message on Showbie and I can give you a call.
Reading – Creative tasks linked to your book
As your English project this week is more open-ended, here are some fun reading tasks for you. These are all for you to link to the book you are currently reading. I can’t wait to see which ones you choose to complete! Send me your work on Showbie!

Water Resistance
This week, I would like you to explore water resistance further. Hopefully, you have completed the grid task on ‘upthrust’ to test whether objects sink or float. Here’s a fantastic example from Oliver to help you if you haven’t already completed this task.
Now we are going to explore water resistance. What do you notice about the shape of the boats below? Why do you think they are shaped like this?
Click on the button below to watch a video about water resistance and air resistance.

This week in Art, I would like you to recreate famous paintings using household items. All you need to do is find a famous piece of artwork and then get creative and recreate it, then take a picture and put the pictures side by side. Here are some examples below. I can’t wait to see what you guys come up with!
Extra challenge: Research the artist of the famous painting you recreate and find out where they were born, when they were born, when they died (if they are no longer alive), where the lived, what inspired them with their artwork and any other interesting facts you find out.

Hello Year 5! I hope you had a lovely half term and feel well-rested! Haven’t we been so lucky with the sunshine?! I hope you have all been wearing sun cream – I have! I have enjoyed lots of walks, bike rides (although one bike ride was a bit of a disaster as I popped the inner tube of my tyre somehow which meant we had to try and fix it in the middle of a cycle path!) and BBQs with this hot weather and have also managed to read 2 whole books! I really enjoy reading but often find I don’t allow myself the time to sit and enjoy a good book! I can’t wait to hear about what you’ve all been up to!!
- I’ve enjoyed exploring new cycle routes!
- As you can see, I was not a happy bunny with a flat tyre!
I’d like to give a few shout outs to some of you for your fantastic work before half term. I really hope you enjoyed our PSHE themed week. You all really embraced the activities set and it was so lovely to see all of the things you were getting up to. Firstly, a huge thank you to Lewis who wrote me such a beautiful letter to say thank you – it brought a tear to my eye and really made me very happy. I thought this was so fitting into our PSHE week and it was such a kind gesture – so thank you! Another shout out to Sophie who created a word search for her Grandma to say thank you for helping her with baking. Once Sophie’s Grandma completed the wordsearch it spelt out a hidden message! What a lovely, kind thing to do! Shout out to Eloise who was the first member of Year 5 to complete her kindness poem. Well done! Shout out to Molly who really embraced all of the PSHE activities and kept herself extremely busy throughout the week. A HUGE shout out to James who has been working on a fantastic history project at home…check out our class shout out page to find out more!
A huge shout out to all of you! You are all taking this time we are in in your stride and I couldn’t be prouder. I hope you are enjoying spending time with your family at home. I am missing you all so very much and love reminiscing on some of our fantastic memories in Year 5! Some of my favourites are the Science fair, all of our PE lessons together, of course, and our fun Golden Time rewards – PIZZA! There are so many memories that I cherish with you all! I’d love to know what some of your favourite memories of Year 5 so far have been.
The home learning and active learning grids are now fully up to date with lots of new open-ended, creative activities for you to enjoy over the next 2 weeks, as well as weekly tasks set on the website. Remember that the activities I provide are for you to dip in and out of. If you find something that sparks more interest such as a history, geography or science project – go for it!! As always, I would LOVE to see what you get up to and you can upload work, photographs, videos, voice notes or send messages on Showbie!
Have a fantastic week! I can’t wait to hear from you all.

RE – Pentecost
We celebrated the Day of Pentecost on Sunday 31st May. Pentecost is a day when Christians celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is celebrated on the Sunday 50 days after Easter. On the first Pentecost, the apostles were celebrating the festival called Shavuot (a Jewish harvest festival) when the Holy Spirit descended on them. It sounded like a very strong wind and it looked like the tongues of fire. This is a very special day in Church and is regarded as the birthday of the Christian church.
Below are some activities linked to the special day of Pentecost.

Science
Hopefully you completed the gravity race on the most recent home learning grid as this will help you with this week’s Science activities. We are focusing on the force of gravity this week.
Gravity, or gravitation, is a natural phenomenon by which all things with mass (e.g. kg) or energy—including planets, stars, galaxies, and even light—are brought toward one another. On Earth, gravity gives weight to physical objects, and the Moon’s gravity causes the ocean tides.

This week, a task from the homework grid is to create your Mayan mask. You have worked hard on this project so far and have completed the research stage, the planning stage and now it is time to do (in our plan, do, review process). I am going to leave this open and free for you all. Choose whichever medium you want: collage, paint, a model/sculpture (3D), printing etc. you could even do a mosaic mask. Be as creative as you can be!
Here are some pictures below of a range of methods, techniques and designs for you to look at before creating your own mask. Remember to try to follow your plan but that it is also okay if you deviate away from your plan. You can talk about this in your evaluation! Enjoy! I can’t wait to see your creations.
Evaluation
Some of you have already created your Mayan masks so you are one step ahead of me!
Once you have completed your Mayan mask, please complete your evaluation. This is a really important step in the process of an Art project as it gives you time to reflect on the skills you have developed, reflect on what went well in your art and how you could further improve. It is also really important to celebrate your own successes so this is a really nice opportunity! I’d love to see your final products along with your evaluations!
Please find the evaluation documents below (they are in a Word document format for you to either print and hand write or edit on word).

Week 9: W/C 18th May
Hello my wonderful Year 5s! We now have another brand new week of new opportunities and fun to be had. You all were fantastic last week and it was so lovely to speak to you all on the phone and hear about all the lovely things you have been getting up to! I have had a super busy week working so enjoyed a quiet weekend with lots of walks in the sunshine. I enjoyed my first trip to my local park with Dexter. It was lovely to have a change of scenery and Dexter enjoyed having a huge open space to run! I’ve had Dexter since I was 12 and lived at home. He still lives at home with my Mum & Dad but comes to stay at my house lots!
I was really impressed with Sophie this week who has been busy doing lots of cooking. She tried a brand new recipe this week on FaceTime with her Grandma and made a tomato soup that tasted just like one from M&S. She has sent me the recipe to try too! I was also very proud of Maxwell who has been working very hard on a chapter book – I am loving the chapters he has sent so far and am looking forward to reading the ending. Another big well done to Dominic who has been working very hard on learning lots of different languages – he has now tried French, Spanish and German! He has shown really perseverance to learn which is fantastic!
Shout out to Holly and Lewis who have achieved the most points on Mathletics this week and another shout out to Oliver who was really proud of himself for achieving a personal best on Mathletics. Well done to all of you!

This week (Week 9) is a very special PSHE themed week so you will notice that lots of activities are linked to PSHE. This week is not only our special PSHE themed week but it is also mental health awareness week with a theme of kindness which fits perfectly with the activities I have set for our special themed week. In Year 5, we love PSHE (PShe) so I hope you enjoy the activities set. Use this week as an opportunity to really connect with your families, to open up conversations about how you are feeling if you haven’t already and to show even more kindness and love towards your family.
Remember to check out our class shout outs page and the new staff shout outs page which is being updated regularly – here you will see what the staff are getting up to too!
I miss you all lots and am continuing to pray that we will all be together again soon, once it is safe. Have a lovely week and have fun!
God bless you all.

PSHE Themed Week
Here is something extra special to mark the start of our PSHE themed week!
- A special message from all the staff at St Joseph’s!
Virtues Calendar
This week, I would like you all to make an extra special effort with those around you – your parents, siblings, perhaps grandparents if they are staying with you and try to do things that might make them smile or make them happy. A great way to start is by using this virtues calendar. All I am asking is for you to complete one activity per day – that’s just 5 activities this week – from this virtues calendar. You might want to, as a family, continue this so you complete all the activities. Not only will these activities help you to put a smile on other people’s faces but it will also help you to feel better about yourself, recognise what is great about you and think about what you are grateful for or what is important to you.
You could download the resource and follow the instructions to create the ‘windows’ on the calendar (a little like an Advent calendar at Christmas) so you can open the windows each day and by the end you will have all the windows opened/ripped off or you could choose 5 of the activities to complete this week.
Wellbeing Activities
Below are 7 ideas for activities you could do together with your family. These are sure to make you and others smile!
Go Noodle – Movement & Mindfulness Videos
We have used GoNoodle videos in class before. If you don’t already have an account, you will need to ask an adult in your home to create an account with an email. Remember to ask permission before you use the internet.
Printable Activities
Please find below even more activities for you to complete during our PSHE themed week. Some of these are printable activities for you.
1 Minute Brain Break Cards Self-Awareness Challenge Cards What does my head feel like? Activity “I am an amazing person” activity What are my best qualities? Activity The Amazing Brain – Activity sheet Bucket of kindness activity Thank you key workers – colouring in pack Colouring in sheets – bumper pack Writing Activity – Random Acts of KindnessEnglish
Linking to this week’s PSHE themed week of kindness. Your English task this week is to write a poem titled ‘Kindness’.
Task 1: Write your own definition of an abstract noun.
The word ‘kindness‘ is a noun. Read up about ‘nouns’ and improve your knowledge on the different types of nouns. Remember our rhyme: person, place or thing and identify what is different about the type of noun that the word ‘kindness‘ is.
BBC Bitesize: What is a noun? (KS3 activity) challenge yourself & take the quiz!!Task 2: Mind map activity (planning stage)
Create a mind map about kindness. Consider all of the following:
- what colour you think kindness would be
- what kindness looks like
- what kindness smells like
- what kindness tastes like
- what kindness feels like
- what kindness might sound like
Use figurative language (similes, alliteration, personification, metaphors) including adjectives and adverbs for each part of the mind map e.g. feels like a warm hug, tastes like flowers in spring, taste (this might be tricky – candyfloss, chocolate). I’m sure you will have lots of ideas! Use an online thesaurus to up-level your vocabulary.
Task 3: Write your poem
Using all of your ideas from your mind map above, write your own poem about kindness. Remember to explode the moment! Add in extra detail and help the reader to see and feel all of the things you are writing by using detailed description. You can do this really well by using similes, alliteration, personification etc. – you are all exceptional at doing this!!
You can use the format below or one of your own choosing (I would say the format below is quite basic and you might be able to come up with something similar). Remember, not all poems need to rhyme.
Kindness is the colour of…
It smells like…
It sounds like…
It feels like…
It looks like…
It tastes like….
When I am kind I feel…
RE/Art
Jesus teaches us to treat others as we would like to be treated and God’s most important commandment is to love God and to love your neighbour as yourself. For RE this week, I would like you to be kind to yourself and treat yourself the way you would treat others. Often, it is easy to forget about being kind to ourselves!
Step 1: (Art) Create a tree. Check out the awesome drawing tricks below to help you get creative with your tree.
For the RE part of this task, you will need to be able to write on the leaves.
Step 2: Fill the tree
Once your Artwork has dried, on each leaf, write all of your amazing qualities – the things you are good at, your personality traits that make you, you such as kindness, patience, courage.. Take inspiration from the Bible quote above. You can also write the things that you like about your life on the leaves – it might be something to do with your family, your friends, where you live, your hobbies, what you enjoy doing, what food you enjoy – anything that makes you happy and makes you who you are! As an extra challenge, you could find Bible quotes about kindness and the qualities that you have to fill around the edge of your paper.
I would like you to take time and be thoughtful with what you write. You will have so many wonderful ideas because you are all amazing! I would love to see your trees once they are full so please send them to me on Showbie. Finally, enjoy the task – perhaps your whole family could make a tree each at the same time.
Prayers
Here are some prayers for you and your families especially our kindness themed week. Perhaps you could even write your own prayer about kindness.

Stay Safe Online
Please remember to to stay safe online while you are completing home learning. You know this so well but it is so important you practice what you preach. The easiest way to remember how to be safe online is to STOP, BLOCK and TELL if something you see doesn’t quite feel right or makes you feel worried or uncomfortable. Remember to tell a trusted adult – it is fine to send me a message on Showbie as I can still help you even though we are not together in school.

As you all know, the month of May is dedicated to our Mother, Mary. Whilst we honour Mary every day throughout the year, through prayer, reflection and song, during the month of May, Mary is specially honoured and there are many ways in which we can do this from home.
During May why not try some of the following activities:
- each day, put time aside to pray, remembering especially the work of our Mother, Mary
- arrange fresh flowers on your prayer table at home
- draw an arrangement of colourful flowers and put them on your bedside table
- sketch a picture of Mary our Mother
- make your very own rosary
- say the rosary with your family
- create a poem devoted to Mary
- sing a hymn devoted to Mary, together as a family
L.O: To show understanding of the importance of prayer.
This week’s RE task follows on from Week 7 so please make sure you have completed the task for RE in Week 7 first.
Your task is to respond to the question below in detail.
How does prayer shape your life?
Please write your answers in full detail. As this might be quite personal, you don’t have to share with me if you don’t want to but if you would like to, please feel free to send me your work on Showbie.

Reading
There are a few options for you this week for reading – see below.
Lots of you are really enjoying Goodnight Mister Tom and I am so thrilled about that! Some of you have already watched the film version. The film version is available on Amazon Prime (for £3.99) and is also available on YouTube to watch for free (although the quality may not be brilliant). If you do watch the film, I would love to know if you find any similarities or differences between the book.
Chapter 4 Guided Reading Comprehensions – Goodnight Mister Tom (answers are on the printable version).
If you would like to complete some guided reading comprehensions on the Mayans (instead of, or as well as Goodnight Mister Tom) here are some for you. Remember, these are split into 3 stars (1 star being the easiest and 3 stars being the most challenging) so have a go at what you feel is most challenging for you!
Writing
This week, your tasks are more open-ended if you choose which will allow you to be more creative. As we have just commemorated VE Day (the 75th Anniversary of Victory in Europe), our writing this week will be VE Day themed. Here are some possible writing tasks you could choose from:
Write a diary entry about your celebrations on VE Day – this will be nice to pop in your memory box so you remember this nationwide celebration! Remember this is an informal piece of writing and technically, no one has to read this – include your own thoughts and feelings!
Write a non-chronological report (information text) on VE Day and why we celebrate it each year but why this year has been extra special! Remember to write in a formal tone as this is a non-fiction piece to inform your audience.
Write a descriptive piece on VE Day celebrations – it could be a poem or a story opener setting the scene. This can have formal and informal tones. The purpose of this is to entertain your audience.

Art – Mayan Mask
Make sure you completed the Art task in Week 6 before you complete this week’s Art activity.
L.O: To plan my Mayan mask.
Masks played a central role in Maya culture. They were made for a variety of occasions and purposes, as you now know from your own research. They were also used to decorate temples. Wealthy Mayan people were buried with a death mask which was intended to protect the wearer on their journey to the afterlife.
This week, you are going to be planning your mask, just like we would do in class following the plan, do, review process in Art. You have done your research behind the project and hopefully took some inspiration from your research. Shout out to Sophie for her hard work on the first step of the Art project – I know she has already started to think about her own plan.
Below are some resources to help your to plan your own mask. Consider the following:

I really love going on to Showbie and seeing what you are all getting up to and it really does put a big smile on my face! I have been enjoying going for walks and doing Yoga and I have been trying to read more.
Below are some more activities for you to support your learning at home. These are for you to choose from. You do not have to complete everything. There may be some activities in previous weeks you haven’t completed yet so would prefer to do those. These are all just suggestions for you to dip in and out of and if you would like to, you can share your work with me to show me what you’ve been up to or to receive feedback on. The most important thing is that you are all staying safe at home and I am hoping and praying that we can all be together again soon! Have a great week!
VE Day (Victory in Europe) – Friday 8th May – Sunday 10th May 2020
VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) is a day celebrating the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces on Tuesday, 8 May 1945. You might hear of lots of celebrations happening this weekend (especially as the bank holiday was changed from the Monday to the Friday to fall on this special day). I know where I live, people are organising a ‘social distancing street party’ where everyone will be on their drives or in their front gardens to celebrate the special day together. Is anything happening where you live?
Below are some activities for you to complete linked to VE Day to support you in your learning about this special day. Enjoy!!

Whilst we are currently at home much more than often, this is a great opportunity for you to get involved in ‘food’ in your house. This could involve food preparation, trying new foods, thinking about food waste at home (do you use leftovers for soups/smoothies? Compost?), or even growing your own fruit and vegetables! You have lots of opportunities to see the process of food from your parents writing their shopping list to then seeing what goes in the bin.
Last term, we met our Food Ambassadors (including Oliver & Eve from our class woo woo!) in an assembly ‘Food Glorious Food’. Please see the PowerPoint below which follows on from this and also includes several activity suggestions for you and your families to try.

Story of Easter Reading ComprehensionPlease ensure you are keeping up with reading at least 4x a week for at least 15 minutes at a time. Although, I know lots of you read much more frequently and for a much longer period of time so well done!
Writing
I hope you enjoyed the poetry task last week. I really enjoyed reading some of the poems you all sent me on Showbie.
Writing Task: Start to create a journal to document your time at home
Your next home learning task will hopefully be an ongoing project and is something I have already been doing since school closed and is to keep a journal throughout this time. Write a diary entry each day to record what happens in your day, how you are feeling, what activities you did during the day. Try to find the really positive experiences that are happening every single day! Like the clap every Thursday for NHS workers, spending time together as a family, seeing rainbows in people’s windows or perhaps having time to read a book you’ve wanted to read for a while or watch a film.
Remember how much we like to read diaries as first hand experience of people back in history? Well one day you will talk about this strange period in your life when you had lots of time off school due to a virus and having a diary to recall what happened would be really interesting. You don’t need to send me any of your journal entries as these will be personal to you but if you would like to then that is also fine. Here are some top tips to help you write a good diary.

Writing
Poetry
Your home learning task in writing is to write an Easter themed poem. I have included the beginning of an Easter poem below and your task is to complete the poem. Remember, a stanza is like a verse in a song and we might see these as the paragraphs in the poem.
- Identify the rhyming pattern in the poem
- Think of words that are linked to Easter that rhyme
- Write your own stanzas
- Remember to continue the rhyming pattern throughout
Once you’ve planned your poem, write it out neatly and decorate it. Perhaps you could send your poem to a neighbour or to your grandparents. I am sure this will be a lovely Easter surprise!
Maths – Easter Themed
As we are in Holy Week, please complete the Maths mystery below. Can you solve the mystery? Easter Themed Maths Mystery
Try the Easter Themed Multiplication Mosaic too. Easter Themed Multiplication Mosaic
Science – Eggsperiment
Your home learning task in Science this week is a very eggciting (pardon the pun) experiment linked to Easter. Can you drop an egg from high above without it breaking? Could you have a competition at home with your family to see who wins? Or, you could all work together and try and try again until your egg can land safely without cracking/breaking! Good luck!

Now, write instructions so that someone else in your class can perform the egg drop successfully without the egg breaking. Remember to include:
- equipment needed
- method (how to make the protection for the egg)
- variables (what you will change and keep the same to make it a fair test?)
- conclusion (if you follow the instructions, what will happen?)
Week 2: W/C 30th March
Please find lots of activities, worksheets and documents to support your learning in Year 5. I would love to see what you get up to so please upload anything to Showbie – this can be word documents, powerpoints, voice notes, pictures or videos.
Remember to also continue to complete the tasks on the home learning grid and active learning grid above before these are refreshed on Friday.
Reading
Where can you read?
Over the course of this week, I would love to you just ‘have fun’ when reading! Where is the most extreme or strangest place you can read in the comfort of your own home or garden? Can you read on your trampoline? In a Wendy house? On a swing? In a den? I am sure you can think of more creative places!
Here are some examples of ‘extreme’ reading… You will have to be imaginative as to where you read in your home/garden as you won’t be able to get to this extreme level!
Reading Comprehensions
Please find some reading comprehension booklets linked to our Science topic of ‘Living things and their habitats’. They are split into 3 parts, 1 star is the easiest and 3 stars is the most difficult. See if you can challenge yourself!
