Week 17 – W/C 13th July 2020
To our wonderful Year 2’s,
This week marks the end of your school year in Year 2. It has been a year like no other, and one that none of us will forget.
We would like you all to reflect on the achievements that you have achieved this year through some really hard and uncertain times. You should be proud of everything that have done in school and at home as it takes a lot of hard work and resilience to achieve the things that you have all achieved this year.
We want to thank each one of you for making our return to school in January, after having our own babies so fantastic! Your hard work, care, happiness and determination has made our jobs so easy and spending time teaching and growing with you in the classroom has been our happy place. You are such a wonderful class, and any teacher will be lucky to have you . We feel like it is an end of a mini era with you, as we have seen you enter Key stage 1 and you have all flourished into confident, hardworking and resilient learners.
You are now ready to take on new challenges and adventures as you start your new journey into Key Stage 2. We know it’s been a long-time sine you were all together in the classroom, and so many have things have changed in the world around you, but you are in safe hands! Mrs Hodgson and Mrs Lowe have some wonderful things planned for you next year, and they will be there to take care of any worries that you have. We will only be down the corridor, and we expect you to come and chat to us on the playground and tell us all about your learning at home and your summer holidays!
It is now time for us to hand over your new learning journey to Mrs Hodgson. We hope you enjoy you transition session with her on Tuesday. We will also be around to make sure you are ok and check in with you from a distance. We are looking forward to seeing how much you have grown and your smiley faces!
Over the week and the summer, we would like you to access the moving into Year 3 page that Mrs Hodgson has set up for you. There are some great activities on there and they will give you a boost for when you enter the doors of Key Stage 2 in September. Below is the page with everything that you need.
Moving into Year 3…We will miss you all so much next year. Thank you for all the memories and happiness you have given us this year.
We hope you have a wonderful summer holiday.
God bless you all and stay safe over the summer,
Mrs Hemming and Mrs LB xxxxxx
P.S. Here are a few quotes to send you on your way into the new adventures of Key Stage 2…..
Week 16 – W/C 6th July 2020
Hello Year 2,
Welcome to the last learning at home page for your time in Year 2. We feel really emotional writing this, and it has been a pleasure supporting everyone of you in your time away from school. It is a period of time that none of us will forget, and we are glad that we shared the journey with you.
We hope you all had a great week learning about chocolate. It seemed to be a popular topic and we have enjoyed seeing your baking and sweet designs this week! Maybe you could continue to read Charlie and the Chocolate factory story as one of your summer holidays books?
This week, we have a different theme to your learning. If we were together in school, we would be looking back over the year and reflecting on how much you have all achieved. We know we have only taught you for a short period of time this year, but we feel like you have been a big part of our lives since we started teaching you when began your journey into Key Stage 1. So this week, we have found lots of activities that will help you reflect on your time in Year 2. We know you did lots of great things with Mrs Talbot too so we are looking forward to hearing about all your year 2 highlights.
Our topic this week is Memories, and whilst I am writing this, I am listening to one of my favorite songs from Lockdown- Memories by Maroon Five. This video, from one of our lovely Year 2 pupil’s sisters is the perfect version of the song. We hope you enjoy listening to her voice and thinking about some of your memories of Year 2 and also from your home learning journey.
Mrs LB and I have had a look back through pictures from your time in Year 2. We have selected a few so you can look back of some of the great times you have had with your teachers and friends in Year 2!
We hope you have a great week reflecting on all your learning and memories from Year 2. Please share your activities with us on Showbie as we would love to see your highlights from your time in Year 2. We can also pass on messages to your friends through Showbie if you would like to share a memory with them!
Enjoy your learning week, and hopefully we will see you at a distance in the final week of term when you visit Mrs Hodgson for your transition activities. If you have any questions about Year 3, we are more than happy to help you so please just ask us.
This week we would also like you to spend some time looking at your transition into Year 3 page. Mrs Hodgson has put some lovely activities on for you to look at over the next few weeks and into your summer holidays ready for September.
Moving into Year 3 transition pageTake care, and God bless you all,
Mrs Hemming and Mrs LB xxxxxxx

This week, our Bible story of the week is all about new beginnings! We thought it was a nice story that links to our theme of reflection and new beginnings, and also the story has a special symbol in it that is relevant to our time at home. I wonder if you can tell us on Showbie what the symbol is?
Here is the story that we would like you to read and learn about. It was the first story that you learnt in Year 1, so it’s a nice way to end your Key Stage 1 journey!

World Ocean Day: 8th June 2020
Mrs LB worked with Year 6 last week and they were also doing work on oceans. I completed this task with them on how to reduce ocean plastic pollution.
Lots of plastic and rubbish often gets dumped in our oceans, this often has an impact on the sea life and ocean animals. Take a look at how you can help.
The Premier League has partnered up with Sky Ocean Rescue to bring you these fun resources. Let’s celebrate our planet and think about how making simple changes can have a positive impact on the local and global environment, helping to prevent further ocean plastic pollution.

Thank you for your hard work and outstanding home learning on Castles last week. It was lovely to talk to you all again this week and share some of your half term holiday activities.
Hollie, your treat box to Ava was out of this world! You really have become a super baker during your time at home! You also blew us away by your computer skills on creating a story about a castles, knights, princesses and dragons! It was such a great story with all the sprites and settings. You have been a super learner this week Hollie, you should be really proud!
Erika, has yet again blasted her way through the challenges this week! Her quality of work is out of this world and she has sent us lots of great facts and research about castles.
This week, Archie got straight onto Mathletics as soon a it was set! He is on fire with his Maths! He also made a wonderful raft out of lollipop sticks and a super colourful sun catcher for his bedroom. He also got a fantastic microscope for his birthday and he has started to examine objects under it. This week, he shared pictures of looking at a fly underneath it! He couldn’t believe how hairy they are, even on the end of their wings! We are looking forward to seeing what other objects you explore under your microscope. A great learning week for you Archie, well done!
Alfred rose to the challenge and created some tricky math’s word problems this week! They were tricky, and we liked how he used football as his stimulus! You have been on fire this week Alfred with all your Maths and Art work! Keep up the super work!
We were blown away by how quickly Charlotte has learnt her times over the past week! She has a super book, and this has really helped her learn all her times tables! She also worked hard on her Pentecost work in the sunshine!
During the week, it was great to see that William and Harry MC went out to explore Spofforth castle and do some field work for their history challenge. It was great to see their pictures, and see them exploring the grounds! Harry even took his own sword and shield to the castle for a bit of role play! Thank you for getting so involved with your history learning this week.
On Thursday, we were so happy to receive some wonderful work from Hollie about how no matter what colour our skin is, we should treat everyone equally. She did a fantastic experiment where she cracked a brown egg and a white egg, and she found that even though they are different on the outside, their inside is the same. She is going to spread the message to all her friends and family, and we think that is a very important and special thing to do in the world we live in. We are really proud of Hollie for doing this work, and we hope she inspires you to do some work about treating everyone equally and people from other cultures.
On Friday, we received a wonderful work package from Harry H on Showbie, it was filled with so many tasks and worksheets he had completed from our home learning tasks and website work. This included his Maths work, a brilliant castle from DT and some wonderful videos of his football training – thank you for sharing all of your great work this week Harry.
We are continuing to take requests for the themes that you would like you’re learning to be based on! This week, we are going to be doing some of Maddie’s ideas! Also, one of my favorite books that I can read over and over again is Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. She was a very famous author from Yorkshire, as were her sisters. We like to read the children’s version in our house as it teaches us about colours and the Yorkshire landscape. Howarth is one of Mrs Hemming’s favorite places, and it’s also on my list to visit very soon. Maybe you could do some research about the Brontes? Or check out this book if you can:
I was inspired by Emilia’s reading den this week. So, we decided to make our own reading den inspired by the North mountain in Frozen! We hope you can find some great places to read this week!
We would also like you to continue reading lots of books over the week. We really enjoy hearing about the variety of books that you are all reading. Please continue to add book reviews to Showbie so we can share good books between Year 2.

Week 11 – W/C 1st June 2020
Welcome back Year 2 to Summer Term 2! We hope you all had a wonderful half term and enjoyed a break in the sunshine.
In the Hemming house, we took advantage of the sunshine and had lots of adventures outdoors! We decided to take a trip to Kirkstall Abbey which was nice and quiet and our boys had lots of fun exploring the ruins. We also ordered a new paddling pool which has stayed up in our garden all week! We have all enjoyed a splash in it over the week! This week we also enjoyed lots of family cooking and baking, and creating leaf men which was Hugo’s home learning! We would love to see what you got up to in the half term holiday! Send us your holiday updates on Showbie!
We would like to start by saying a BIG thank you to all of you for your hard work and dedication last half term! Although we have been apart from school, we have enjoyed sharing your learning at home journey with you, and we are so proud of all your achievements. We have 7 weeks left in Year 2, and we are looking forward to seeing you grow and reach your end of year goals in our care. We will be here for you over the next 7 weeks, and if you need anything at all, you know where we are!
Before half term, you blew us away with the effort that you put into PHSE week. You took the time to reflect, and shared some of your wonderful activities with us and here are just a few of our highlights!
We enjoyed reading Carlo’s recipe and seeing his outstanding writing. He is making so much progress in his writing and we can’t wait to see it in real life!
Erika blasted her way through all the online learning for our PHSE week. She blew us a way with her retell of Jonah and the Whale, it was lovely to hear her retelling the story and making the props to tell the story! Thank you for sharing all your amazing work with us Erika!
Orla really thought about the message of being kind last week. She shared with us lots of different things she did throughout the week to shed kindness to her family. We really liked that you phoned your grandad to check he was ok, and also hoovered the living room! You can have a job here any time to help with our house work! Thank you for being so kind to everyone, this such a lovely quality to have.
We also enjoyed reading Rufus’s Lockdown diary this week about what he has been getting up too! Sounds like you have been having a great time in your time at home, and also super handwriting too!
It was also lovely to see that Maddie continued with some of our Olympic work this week. She wrote to Laura Weightman to help her with her newspaper report. Laura said she might write to you all! So, watch this space! Here is a picture of her to inspire some of you to do more research and work on the Olympics….
Last week, we asked you to think about topics that you would like to learn about over the next half term. We have had a few ideas come in so far, keep them coming in as we have 7 weeks this half term! This week, our learning is based on Carlo’s ideas! He wants to learn about Castles, knights and Lego! So, we hope you all enjoy some of these activities at home!

Week 9 – W/C 18th May 2020
To start, we thought we would send you a picture of a very happy time for Mrs LB and Mrs Hemming. Our picture on Showbie is a special one, a few years ago we completed a Midnight Walk for St Gemma’s Hospice with Mrs Duggan and Mrs Hughes. We had our faces painted with butterflies and we walked miles during the night to raise money for a very special charity. At the end of the walk we picked up our medals. This picture reminds us of a very happy time!
It has been lovely to speak to you all this week on the phone and find out what you have been up too. We are missing you all so much, and we think you are all doing an amazing job at home with your home learning.
First, we would like to say a big Happy Birthday to Archie and Joseph R! They both celebrated their Lockdown birthdays this week. Archie enjoyed playing on his new bike and Joseph had the most wonderful chocolate cake made by his brothers! We hope you both had great birthdays!
We really enjoyed all your VE day work. Joseph R shared a fantastic word presentation of how he celebrated the day. Your baking looked fantastic again Joseph!
Casper produced the most amazing questions to Mrs LB’s brother. We are so impressed about the thought you put into your questions and we are glad you enjoyed reading Matthew’s responses. This really kept us smiling this week.
Please continue to look at our shout out page to see all the fantastic work you are doing at home, and to check out your friends work!
PSHE Themed Week
This week our theme is going to look a little bit different. We are going to be thinking about looking after our bodies this week and doing a variety of activities to help us keep our bodies and minds healthy. We hope you enjoy this week and we are looking forward to hearing about how you have found this week.
Here is something extra special to mark the beginning of our themed week.
- A special message from all the staff at St Joseph’s!
Throughout the week we would like you to take some time to check out the new Social, Emotional, Mental Health (SEMH) page, which includes a broad range of fun and interesting activities and offers resources to help children deal with situations they find stressful, how to regulate their feelings and build resilience.
We would also like you to ask your children to look at this Virtues calendar.
This provides a month worth of opportunities/ ideas to build children’s virtues such as character, resilience, gratitude and neighbourliness. The ideas are simple, doable and encourage us to be kind on ourselves and others at this difficult time.
Please ask children to choose 5 from the menu – which is one each day and they might like to choose the same or different ones to their siblings.
We would like you to start the week off by having a look at these 5-minute activity cards. We would like you to choose a few a day and find 5 minutes to yourself to complete a challenge.
5 minute activitiesTry to complete the activity in a different place each day!
These are also lovely ideas that you might like to use during the week. We will be trying out a few of the ideas! We have enjoyed starting a play list already and we will keep adding to it over the week. We hope you can enjoy some of the activities as a family. Share any of your ideas and activities with us on Showbie!
This week, some of the activities may get your children asking questions about some of their emotions and ask different questions that you might be surprised to hear. If you would like any support or guidance, or your child would like a chat with myself or Mrs LB, drop us a message on Showbie and we are more than happy to help.
We are really looking forward to this week, and taking some time to think about keeping our bodies and brains healthy.
As well as our challenges, we have also had a look at the BBC bitesize lessons. They are great so have a go at some of the lessons this week and see how you get on. Here is the link to help you get onto the website!

E-Safety
This week please remind your child of the “STOP, BLOCK, TELL” message that you shared with your child when we started learning at home.
Here were the key top tips we learned for staying safe online:
- Keep your personal information safe and private (don’t share it with anyone).
- People online are not always who they say they are (don’t become friends with someone online that you haven’t met before in real life and never meet up with anyone you speak to online).
- Ask before you share – think carefully about the photos you post on the internet. You need to have permission before you post photos of other people online.
- Think carefully about the words you use on the internet.
- If you see something you feel uncomfortable with, STOP, BLOCK AND TELL!
- Always speak to a trusted adult.
Year 2 – Can you make an E-Safety poster and display it somewhere in your home? You could make this on a computer if you have one at home, with some pens, pencils and some paper, or be creative and use any tools or equipment you may have at home. We will look forward to seeing your posters on Showbie.

This week, as a family we would like you to have a think about how you can add new ways to be grateful for the things around us. In these uncertain times, its sometimes hard to forget about the positive things in our lives but it’s nice to take a step back and say thank you. In the Hemming house this is something we have really tried to focus on over the past few weeks. Before bed, after our prayer we all try and say one thing we are thankful for in the day. It has taken a bit of practise, but it’s now such a lovely part of the day and something we all look forward too.
Here are some other ideas that you might like to add in your houses over the next week –
• Thankful jar
• Gratitude journal
• Making a collage of all the things you are grateful for

This is the task we would like you to complete –
Your task –
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzMo_fysxbI
Watch this video to help you with your RE learning objective this week. Start the video at one minute!
When you have competed your script please share it with us on Showbie! We would love to see pictures and videos of your drama too!
You could also write a letter to other Christians to spread the message of Jesus appearing to the disciples.
Martin House
Unfortunately we couldn’t complete our fundraising campaign for Martin House, but we will hopefully be able to do something in the future for them. In the mean time, maybe you could complete a few tasks linked to Martin House.
You could:
- Write a letter to a child or a family who use Martin House – ask them how they are.
- Draw a happy picture to make someone smile.
- Complete your own fundraising – run around the your garden, complete a challenge, do something you find tricky.
- Create a product and try and sell it your parents, family or friends. Think Dragons Den!
Maths
This week our math’s activity links to the Great Fire of London. We would like you to have a go at the following activity. Let us know how you get on by sharing your work on Showbie!
As the Great Fire started in a baker’s shop, we would like you to use your math’s measuring skills this week to do some baking! Hopefully not setting fire to your house though!!
While you are baking, we would like you to use some of the measuring vocabulary. We would like you to read the scales while measuring out your ingredients, write out the recipes, write the measurements using grams (g) Kilograms (Kg) liters (l) milliliters (ml).
We know there is a shortage of some ingredients you might need for baking, so we will leave what you want to bake in your bakers shop up to you. In the Hemming house we are going to be working on vegan scones and cakes preparing for a special birthday in our house!
We are looking forward to seeing your creations and how you got on with using different measurements.
Can you repeat the activity with another recipe?
Here are some websites that we use a lot for baking! Hope you find some exciting recipes! Please share any other good recipes with us- we like new ideas and recipes!

It is really important that you continue to read at home. It could be a book (Fiction or Non-Fiction), magazines, newspapers, menus, online books, comics etc.
We are looking forward to hearing about the books you have been reading at home, and also adding all your reading at home to our Walk of Fame reading challenge when we are back to school.
Have a listen to some of these stories and poems from one of our favourite authors. Let us know on Showbie which story or poem was your favourite!.
