Week 16: W/C 6th July
Hi team!
Can’t believe this is the last week of home learning as Year 1! It has truly been a pleasure to teach you and to work alongside you, I wish we had more time together in Year 1 but thankfully we will still get to see each other all the time and work together when we do the Key Stage 1 Nativity and I will always see you in the cloakroom! I hope you have enjoyed Year 1 as much as I have and I hope you are so excited to be going to Year 2! This week I would like us to focus on memories and lots of different activities to practice all of the learning we have done in Year 1. Below is a link to your Year 2 transition page so you can have a look at some of the activities Mrs Hemming and Mrs LB would like you to try. There is also lots of information about your new teachers and what your topic might be in September…
Year 2 Transition Page!PSHE
Below are lots of activities for you to have a go at so you feel prepared for transition. Transition into a new class can sometimes make you feel a little bit anxious or nervous and that is completely normal. I know how brilliant you will all be in Year 2 but for you to feel more comfortable and for your new teachers to get to know you a little better, there are some activities to try below!
Transition Activity 1 Transition Activity 2 Transition Activity 3RE
This week in RE, I would like you to choose your favourite Bible story and draw a picture of it. You can colour it in using any medium you would like e.g. painting, pencils or tissue paper! Anything creative really. Don’t forget to add a caption for your drawing and I look forward too seeing your wonderful art work on Showbie! Remember the stories we have looked at; Noah’s Ark, The story of Blind Bartimaeus, The Paralyzed Man, Jesus Calming the Storm and The Christmas story!
Reading
This week I would like you to have a go at the 2 phoneme spotters below. Phoneme spotters are a great way to embed your phonics learning and to identify the different sounds in different words. Make sure you read the spotters out loud to support your spotting! Use a coloured pencil to colour in the words when you spot the correct sound. Why not think of your own words using the sounds in the phoneme spotters? Write a list of these words!

This week for your writing task I thought we could have some fun completing the ‘If I were an animal, what animal would I be?’ activity! When I saw this I had a really good think about what animal would best describe me and I decided on a dog because they are caring, loving and can sometimes have a hyper 5 minutes! This activity is really good for thinking of some really good adjectives and for practicing writing in full sentences. I can’t wait to read all of your ideas!

Challenge: Can you have a go at one of these and time yourself. Then, after a few more days, try again and see if you can beat your score?
PSHE
I would like you to think about how you are feeling in PSHE. Every emotion is absolutely fine to feel and you are allowed to feel everything you do! Sometimes feeling worried can lead us to feel a bit sad or sometimes angry. Below is a worry monster to help you! I would like you to name your monster (mine is Barry) and then write anything at all that is worrying you onto your monster. Sometimes sharing a worry makes you feel better! When you have completed that, you can either keep it private or share with someone you trust. Why not decorate your monster too? Barry is going to have a rainbow tummy and blue eyes for me!

RE
Our RE topic this half term is Miracles. The first miracle I would like us to focus on is when Jesus calmed the storm. To begin your learning, watch this video so that you know the story and are confident with it (remember we looked at this story when we were learning about the Year of the Word).
I would like you now to think of some questions you would ask Jesus about this miracle. What do you wonder? Use the worksheet below to support your learning and ask 5 questions. Remember, lots of our questions are difficult to answer but we can still wonder and ask!
Questions to JesusChallenge: Write a diary entry as somebody on board of this boat. How would they feel? What would they see? Think of your 5 senses and use these to help you describe the events you have witnessed! I would love to see your wonderful diary entires and be able to put as many as I can on the Year 1 shout out page!
Reading
Below you will find a link to the Oxford Owl website with a number of different e-books for you to use at home! You can browse through and choose from a range of books from Biff, Chip and Kipper to non-fiction stories. Choose a few to have a go at and let me know which was your favourite and why!
Why not write a book review about your favourite e-book that you have listened too? Maybe you could share your favourite with a friend or family member and encourage them to have a look at the book too!

I absolutely loved some of your letters last week to someone special! They were so lovely and I’m sure they put a smile on the recipients face! This week, I would like you to write a recount of your half term holiday. You could write about an activity you did with your family, somewhere you went on a walk, a favourite film you watched or fun you had in the garden!
First, make a plan of your recount. It is important to plan out what you would like to write about so that your recount makes sense and is in chronological order. Use the planning format to support your learning and make sure you refer to this plan when you are writing so you don’t forget anything.
Planning a recountAfter you have made a plan, its time to start writing! Make sure you use your plan to support your recount. Say your sentence out loud first before writing it down to help with it making sense.
Recount writing frameOnce you have completed your fabulous recount, its time to edit and improve! First, read back your work out loud to check it all makes sense and the sentences are not jumbled up! Then, get your plan and check you have included everything. Check to see if you can add anything to make it even more exciting e.g. an adjective! Once you have checked it all through, get an adult to read what you have written and support you with editing and improving anything you’ve missed.

Hello Year 1. I hope you are well and had a good weekend with lots of rest and play. I hope you had a lovely weekend in the sunshine too. There has been some really super learning going on! Emily has been working really hard on creating Antarctica in a box! It really looked excellent and you can see a lot of work has gone into it! Grace has been enjoying reading at home, choosing lots of books to read for pleasure! It was lovely to hear her discuss with such enthusiasm the stories she has enjoyed! Oscar has been writing a letter to his grandma. He tried his best to make sure his handwriting was excellent and used brilliant full stops and capital letters! Philip had so much fun at home completing the active learning alphabet search! He managed to find an item for all of the letters of the alphabet all around his house! Eleanor has been completing so much learning too! She has been getting creative with her sister, making baby penguins and a shop to practice her money! Well done Year 1, I am very proud of you!
This week is a very special PSHE themed week with the theme of ‘kindness’. We know in Year 1 that it is very important to be kind and it feels good to be kind too!
Here is something extra special to mark the beginning of our themed week.
- A special message from all the staff at St Joseph’s!
PSHE
Throughout the week I would like you to take some time to check out the new Social, Emotional, Mental Health (SEMH) page, which includes a broad range of fun and interesting activities and offers resources to help children deal with situations they find stressful, how to regulate their feelings and build resilience.
STOP, BLOCK, TELL
This week please remind your child of the “STOP, BLOCK, TELL” message that you shared with your child when we started learning at home.
Wellbeing activities
It is so important to look after yourselves at all times, both physically and mentally. Below are 7 well being activities for you to try whilst at home this week. These will make you smile, your family smile and maybe a stranger smile! Remember that smiling brightens up the world and all of your smiles certainly do that!
Fill a Bucket
Do you remember the story we looked at all about feeling a bucket? I would you to revisit this as a family! This story is all about the importance of filling people’s emotional buckets as well as your own.
Do you feel really good after giving/receiving a compliment?
Do you like to make people smile and feel good?
After you have listened to the story, you could choose a bucket in your house to have as your wellbeing bucket. Throughout the week, if something makes you feel happy, you could write this down and fill it up. How full do you think you could get it?
However, if something makes you feel sad, like in the story, your bucket might tip meaning something will fall out! I wonder how full your bucket will be by the end of the week?
Virtues calendar
This month I would like you to ask your children to look at the attached Virtues calendar. This provides a month worth of opportunities/ ideas to build children’s virtues such as character, resilience, gratitude and neighbourliness The ideas are simple, doable and encourage us to be kind on ourselves and others at this difficult time.
Please ask children to choose 5 from the menu- which is one each day and they might like to choose the same or different ones to their siblings.
Sing and Dance!
I know how much Year 1 absolutely love a good sing and dance in the class so I have no doubt this is the same for when you are at home too! Below is the song ‘Happy’ by Pharell Williams. Put this song on nice and loud in your living rooms and have a good old dance together as a family! I guarantee you feel great afterwards!
Mindfulness colouring
These colouring activities are wonderful if you need an escape and want to focus on making something beautiful! I know you have seen that I have had a go at a few of these on Showbie so I would love to see yours too! These colouring activities are extra special though as they have lots of words of encouragement on them!

I know how much you are all enjoying our Arctic vs Antarctica topic. I would like you to complete some research of the Arctic. When you have found out some key facts, choose your favourite and most interesting fact. When you have chosen this, use the template below of a snowflake to write it on. Make sure you write your fact neatly and big enough for people to read. When you have done this, you can decorate your snowflake! Why not display your snowflake on your living room window! Please send me pictures of you with your snowflake!

This week in Art I would like you to focus on pencil work. I would like you to draw your favourite animal! For example this could be a dog, cat, fish or an elephant! I would like you to think about your colour choices too and really think about if it is the correct colour choice! I will be completing this activity too so make sure you look out for Miss Mac’s artwork too! Please find a tutorial video below to support you.
Science
To keep with our Arctic vs Antarctica theme, I would like you to have a go at making snow fluff!
Materials: 1 cup of corn starch, 1 cup of shaving cream and food colouring (optional!)
Instructions:
- Pour the cup of corn starch into a large bowl. Use a spoon to scoop the shaving cream on top of it. Put 5-10 drops of food coloring on top. Stir to mix.
- When the mixture looks like grated cheese, use your hands to squish the mixture even more.
- Pretty soon the shaving cream and corn starch will form a ball, about the same texture as dough.
- If your mixture is really wet and sticky after mixing, it needs a little more corn starch. If it won’t stick together and falls into pieces, add a little more shaving cream.
- That’s it! Try sculpting snow angels, snowmen, or make a tiny snow fort!
PE
I have a very exciting PE lesson for you this week by no other than our very own Mr Cooper. Mr Cooper has created a brilliant resource to support your PE learning. Week 8: W/C 11th May
Hello Year 1. I hope you are well and had a good weekend with lots of rest and play. I really hope you had a great time celebrating VE Day at home too! Below are this week’s activities to keep you busy and support your learning at home while we are apart. Well done to all of you who have sent messages, videos, photos and work to me via your Showbie accounts. It was great to check in with lots of families through phone calls last week! Was lovely to hear your voices! I also love checking in with you every day on Showbie to see what you’ve been learning about – it always makes me smile! Last week I was so impressed with Freddie’s beautiful writing about VE Day, some really lovely handwriting and spellings! It was also so lovely to see Ophelia learning with her Grandma on FaceTime about the Good Samaritan and the message of this parable. Louisa produced a brilliant ‘Narwhale’ and described it brilliantly. I loved the variety of colours. Bea has also been using lots of colours whilst creating a great 4 seasons poster! Please continue to share your work with me.
Please feel free to pick and choose from the grids and the activities below. It’s up to you how much home learning you can manage and it’s most important to me that you are happy and safe at home with lots of play and talk too. I hope that you and your families are all well. I really do miss seeing you guys and teaching you in the classroom. Thank you so much for your hand work and thank you to parents and grandparents for supporting your child’s learning at home. Enjoy this week’s learning and I look forward too seeing what you get up to this week!
RE
In RE, our topic is the Resurrection. Now that you have listened to the resurrection story. I would like you to use your knowledge to create a poster of Jesus rising. You could lay it out with big letters at the top ‘Jesus has risen’ and draw a picture of Jesus. Remember to draw the symbols and signs that Jesus has risen on the poster. Feel free to get creative and use different materials, colours, paint or pencils. I look forward too seeing your art and understanding of the signs that Jesus has risen from your posters.
Reading
I would like you to have a go at this au and aw phoneme spotter this week. Have a read of the text and when you find the au or aw spelling, underline or colour it in so you don’t forget! Phoneme spotters are part of the SoundsWrite scheme so are really useful when learning and recapping sounds.
aw phoneme spotter au phoneme spotter
Writing
This week I would like you to write a description of your view from your bedroom window. I would like you to first plan some adjectives to describe what you can see from your window. You could also use your 5 senses to describe some things outside of your window. Once you have written your description, you could draw a picture to support your learning. I look forward to reading your descriptions. Remember to describe enough so that I can use my imagination to see the view!
As well as the activities above, why not have a go at the SPAG activity mat below? These are great as they are very short activities to practise lots of things we have been learning about in SPAG. These are now summer SPAG mats to try!
Maths
This week I would like you to focus on fractions. The fractions we look at in Year 1 are 1/2 and 1/4. To practice your learning, you could look at fractions practically or alternatively, you could use the activities below to support your learning. Some practical learning ideas are sharing fruit between 2 or 4 people, sharing toys or with pizza! You could make the pizza together first and then split it into halves and/or quarters.
As well as fractions, if you fancy more maths activities, please visit the BBC Bitesize page. There are daily maths lessons which are great. Follow the link below or alternatively, type in BBC Bitesize maths Year 1 on google and you will find it! There are different topics available such as add and subtract, fact families and number bonds. Please feel free to share thiis learning with me on Showbie as well as the above learning!
Year 1 BBC Bitesize maths lessonsScience
I am feeling inspired by Emily’s science experiment last week so thought it would be fun for you all to have a try! First you need to make a polar tray! Get some polar animals and fill a tray with some water. Then stick some ice in the water (icebergs). Once you have done that, measure the height of the water using a ruler. After a while, measure the height of the water again, has anything changed? Are the icebergs still there? When the ice has completely melted, check to see if the water levels have risen and if so, by how much? Record your information next to the times in which you measured the water e.g. after 20 minutes, 40 minutes etc. I look forward to seeing your investigations on Showbie!

Well done to all of you who have sent messages, videos, photos and work to me via your Showbie accounts. I love checking in with you every day on Showbie to see what you’ve been learning about – it always makes me smile! Danielle’s robot was fantastic and it was impressive to see Ryker reading his times tables upside down! Abigail worked hard with me at school to crack the mystery of Dragonspire Castle, as did lots of you at home too! Edward has been baking lots of yummy treats and Andrew has rode his bike 8km! Please continue to share your work with me.
Please feel free to pick and choose from the grids and the activities below. It’s up to you how much home learning you can manage and it’s most important to me that you are happy and safe at home with lots of play and talk too. I hope that you and your families are all well. VE Day: 75 Years
This week, there is a very special day which we will remember and celebrate in the UK. It’s called VE day. It is celebrated this Friday 8th May. Maybe you could have a tea party in your garden? It looks like we have some sunshine this week! Alternatively, you could set up a tea party in your front room or dining room! Try to learn about VE day so that you can tell someone what it is all about. Why don’t you see if you can chat to anyone in your family who may remember this too. Here are some activities below to help you learn about it. I look forward too seeing how you celebrate it on Showbie.

RE
In RE, our topic is the Resurrection. To help you with this at home, it would be good if you could listen to the story of when Jesus resurrected. I have put a short animation of this below. I would then like you to think of some questions you would ask Jesus about his appearance and what he is thinking or feeling. These questions can be presented in any way you would like but remember they must always end with a question mark as you are asking questions. Please upload your questions to Showbie and remember that a lot of the time, our questions cannot be answered but we can still wonder!
Reading
This week I would like you to choose your favourite reading book from the selection you took home with you (either your reading books or library books) and write a book review of this book. Below I have attached a book review template for you to present your work on. Please try to write in full sentences with a capital letter to start it and a full stop to end it. Don’t forget to let me know what happens in your book – I might want to read it if you do a really good book review!
Click on here for a book review template.
As well as your book review, it would be great if you could continue to learn some of the Year 1 common exception words. To do this, here is a word search where you have to find the letters hidden in other words. You’ll need to be like a detective and look really closely. See if you can find them all and then practise reading them. Maybe you could write them on post its and stick them around the house. Every time you walk past a word during the week, you could stop and read the word. By the end of the week, you’ll be experts!
Click here for the word search.
Writing
This week I would like you to work on proper nouns and capital letters. It is important that the children can recognise when they need a capital letter. Before starting this activity, do a quick check in to see where they are with their knowledge of capital letters. Ask them when we need to use a capital letter. After they explain their understanding, have a go at the activities below.
Click here for capital letter activity for names, people and places. Click here for proper noun sorting activity.
As well as the activities above, why not have a go at the SPAG activity mat below? These are great as they are very short activities to practise lots of things we have been learning about in SPAG.
Click here for a SPAG mat activity.
Maths
This week I would like the children to focus on recognising different coins. It would be great if you could get different coins from your pockets regularly and let the children practise recognising the value of the coins and put these into the correct order from lowest value to highest value. Once they know the value, they can move on to counting money and working out how much things cost. There are 2 activities below to support this learning.
Click here for coin ordering activity. Click here for cost of ice cream activity.
As well as coins, if you fancy more maths activities, please see the tutorials and worksheets on the White Rose Home Learning page which you can go directly to by clicking the button underneath the image below. There are daily tutorials for the full week, so these provide a lovely addition to your maths home learning is you would like to access more with your child. The answers are also included.

Below I have attached a PowerPoint about food to support your child’s PSHE learning. There are plenty of activities to have a go at on the PowerPoint. I would love to see what the children complete so please send any work you would like to share via Showbie.
Click here for PSHE food activity.
Art
The children had chosen the topic of Arctic vs Antarctica for our Summer 1 topic, so for art this week, I would like you to have a go at painting or using colouring pencils to plan and then create your own Arctic/Antarctic animal! You can choose what it looks like, how big it is or if it lives in water or on land! Whilst you are planning, label what you have drawn and why you have given your animal this. Then draw carefully with a pencil before colouring it in carefully and neatly.
Week 6: W/C 27th April
Please find lots of activities, worksheets and documents to support your learning in Year 1.
RE
This week I would like you to focus on how Jesus appeared to his Disciples when he resurrected. Put yourself in the Disciples shoes, how would you feel if you saw this? I would like you to role play this with your family. Ask everyone to choose someone to be and then together, act out this special time.
Top tips:
- Watch the YouTube video to help you.
- Choose your roles
- Perform your drama together, identifying the key parts of the story.
Reading
I know from Showbie that lots of you enjoyed these comprehension tasks and it really helped with both reading and understanding. Therefore, I have set some more of these tasks for you to have a go at! Reading comprehension skills are really important for the children to practice. Some of the key skills the children need to be able to do are; sift information out to answer questions, understand terminology and what some words mean and understanding characters thoughts and motives. Below are some activities to support their learning in those areas. Please note at this point I am happy for you to support your child with reading these texts as some of them are quite tricky but I’d like them to practice their comprehension.

Writing
This week I would like you to work on adding suffixes to words. This is really important for the children to have a go at, particularly the ‘ed’ ending which sounds like ‘t’. Children often have the misconception that words like jumped or walked are jumpt or walkt in their writing, so its important that they are aware of this rule.
Writing-ed-words-application-activity
After you’ve tried the activities, why not try applying your knowledge and writing sentences using some of these words e.g. I walked to the shops this morning.
Why not have a go at the spag mat below?
Maths
This week I would like you to focus on some problem solving! I absolutely love these activities and i’m sure you and your child are going to as well. Below is a mystery you need to solve using your maths knowledge. Answer the questions, work out the answers to solve the mystery! Please feel free to support your child with this new mystery, particularly with the money question. I will leave last weeks on here too as lots of you haven’t had a chance to have a go at it yet.

Mr Mercer’s Music Class for Year 1
Mr Mercer, our music teacher at school from Artforms, has been busy creating music classes for children across Leeds to enjoy. Please follow the YouTube link below to find Year 1’s Music class. We really hope you enjoy this and we thank Mr Mercer for his hard work on this too!
As we are close to summer and the weather is lovely, I would like you to have a go at a racket sport outdoors. This could be tennis, rounders, hockey, badminton or any others you would like. I would like you to practice your accuracy and aim to try and hit the ball/shuttle cock. This takes lots of practice and concentration. Practice this as often as you can and record how far you can hit each day. Do you think your distance will improve?
Geography
The children had chosen the topic of Arctic vs Antarctica for our Summer 1 topic. Last week I asked you to research the Antarctica and the week before that, the Arctic. This week I would like you to have a look at where these places are on a world map. I would like you to plot them onto a map and compare where each of them are on our earth, what they are near and what countries/continents are they near. When you have done that, research a near by countries weather. Is it similar/different?

Reading
This week I’d like you to take a look at some of these reading activities that will help your child with practicing their reading comprehension.

This Sunday marked the start of Holy Week. During this week, we prepare for a special very time – the death and resurrection of Jesus! Think about the importance of this week and the significance of Good Friday and Easter Sunday. You could read through parts of the Bible, read the Easter story and then try to retell the story in different ways. You could write a poem, create a piece of art work, create a piece of writing, or even act out a part of the story.
Can you act out the Story of the Resurrection?
Things for you to think about and remember:
- Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday when it was discovered his body wasn’t in the tomb.
- Thomas didn’t believe that it was Jesus at first.
- What did Jesus do to convince Jesus?

Writing/RE
This week I would like you to write a letter to Canon Nunan about the reasons we celebrate Easter and what you will be doing at home to celebrate this special time. You may also want to ask him questions about Easter time and what you wonder about this time. Remember the structure of a letter from when we wrote letters to Captain Hook in Autumn 2! If you are unsure of Canon’s address, look online for our churches address and ask a grown up for your own to put at the top.

Then I would like you to hide these around your house and gardens. Once you have done that, it is a race for your family members to see who can collect the most of the eggs! Once they have had a turn, get someone else in your family to hide them and you can have a turn at running around trying to find them.
Below are some egg templates for you to decorate but please feel free to be creative and make your own eggs if you would like too!
