Week 17: W/C 13th July

This week is a very exciting one as you are all going to have the opportunity to meet Miss Mac and see your friends again at the transition session this Thursday! Myself and Mrs Skilbeck will also be there and cannot wait to see you all again. Before the session please take a look at the page below by clicking on the button. Miss Mac has filled the page with a summer learning grid and resources to help to prepare you as you enter Year 1 in September.

As you make this transition into Year 1, it marks the end of your very first year in school. Despite it not being as we had planned, I hope that you leave FS2 with fond memories of the times spent with your friends and teachers. I hope that you take with you, your kindness towards yourself and others, your manners and your perseverance. This is something that you have all shown over the last few months during these very strange times and I am incredibly proud of each and every one of you, for your amazing attitude towards home learning, despite facing challenges along the way.

I hope you have a fantastic summer break and wish you all the very best for Year 1, you will love it!

Week 15: W/C 29th June

Hello FS2!

I am SO impressed with how hard you are all still working both at home and in school. Your hard work is really paying off and I know that Miss Mac has been looking at your work on Tapestry and is very impressed with what she has seen so far. I think you might all nearly be ready to start Year 1!
Before then though, we have got an exciting last couple of weeks planned all linked to “Alien’s Love Underpants”! I know how much you all loved “Dinosaurs Love Underpants” earlier this year and I hope that you love this version as much.

Please also keep sending me your “Wednesday Challenge” ideas, I know lots of you are really enjoying completing them!

Under week 15, please also find additional activities to support those of you that have requested more for your child to do, please pick and choose from these activities. As I have already said to you all, do what works best for you and your child. I look forward to seeing what you have been getting up to on Tapestry.

I hope you all enjoy another great week and I can’t wait to see what you have all been up to!

Miss Collier

RE

We have now completed our learning on the Church and this week I would like us to focus on prayer and its importance.

Start the learning by asking your child what prayer is? (Where we talk to God, Jesus or Mary)
Then ask your child what they might say when they pray. Ideas might be around:
-Thanking God for something or someone in our lives (Family, friends, toys, the world around us).
-Telling God about something that is worrying them and asking for help with it or possibly forgiveness.
-Sharing some exciting news with God and sharing our lives.

Ask your child when/ where they might pray.
Ideas might be around at home, in school and at Church. However, please emphasis that prayer can happen anywhere.

Once you have had your discussions and made notes have a break before coming back to the activity below.

Prayer Intention Activity

Recap your previous discussions and write a prayer intention. Ask your child what they would like to say in their prayer and why and then write it together.
Then decorate it in bright colours and patterns to show its importance and display it somewhere significant in your home.
Finally, say the prayer and consider what your next prayer intention may be and why.

Our Father and Hail Mary

By the time children leave FS2 we usually expect that they will know the Our Father and Hail Mary prayers and are able to say them independently.

Please practice saying these prayers with your child and talk about what some of the more difficult words mean such as “Trespasses”.

Please also ensure that your child is making the sign of the cross correctly as pictured below.

Maths

Tens and Ones

Activity 1
Explain that over the next two weeks we are going to be focusing on place value. Explain that place value is about how much a number represents. Use 15 as an example by writing it on a piece of paper. Then put a line down the middle as the picture below shows.

Explain and use objects to demonstrate that the 1 does not represent 1 object but 10. Then show how the 5 represents 5 objects. Combine the objects together to then show that when you combine the two parts it equals 15. You can refer back to the work from last week on combining groups to help you.

You may want to use the part, part, whole model that we have used previously to support this understanding that the two parts make the whole. However, ensure your focus remains on how much each number represents.

Part, part, whole model

This session will need to be repeated in at least two different sessions before you move on, using numbers between 10 and 19.

Activity 2
Once your child is confident with the first activity, that has been repeated, move onto larger numbers in the 20’s.

Repeat the first activity but this time with numbers between 20 and 29.

What does the 2 represent? How are we going to show this? Repeat with lots of numbers over a couple of sessions to ensure that it is embedded.

Extension: Look at numbers between 30 and 39, repeating the activities above.

Weight

Activity 1
Find 5 different objects from around your house.

Feel how heavy or light they are and put them in order from heaviest to lightest.

What do you notice about the size compared to the weight? Can you make any conclusions?

Extension: Get out the weighing scales and write down how much each object weighs. What do you notice about the numbers as the items get heavier?

Activity 2
Complete the classroom secrets game below.

Phonics

Complete the phonics assessment again and compare to the one we did last half term.

Phonics Assessment

Then focus on the sounds/ tricky words that your child is still struggling with to complete the following activities.

Sounds Around
Write sounds that your child is still struggling with on sticky notes and stick them on prominent places all around your home. Each time your child passes that sound they must say it.

Extension: You could even get your child to think of a word starting with that sound.

Tricky Word Bingo
Using the words that your child is still learning play bingo.

Complete the sentence

Using the sheets below complete the sentences with as much detail as possible. For example, if you can see an apple, what colour is it? Then include the detail when completing the sentence.

RE

Recap the learning that you have done so far on the Church.
1. The Church represents God’s family.
2. The learning around St Joseph’s Church

Explain that this week we are going to focus on the importance of Sunday as a Holy day.
Start by asking your child if they have a favourite day of the week and why. Remind them of the days they come to school and the days they are at home.

What do they do on their favourite day that makes it so great?

Then explain that in our faith as a Catholic’s, Sunday is a very special day. Talk about what you do on a Sunday in your family to mark this day. Do you go to Church?

Now read the story about Josie and her family.
Josie getting ready for Church

Once the story has been read ask your child to colour and decorate the word Sunday below and write around it why it is so special and important.

Sunday

Extension: Role play! Pretend that you are getting ready to go to Church. What would you wear? How would you get ready?

Get ready as if you are going to Church and then have your own private prayer at home or do it on a Sunday when you watch Mass online.

Packing your case for your space mission!
Following on from last week’s work on combining groups of objects, complete the suitcase packing activity below, ready to blast off into space!

Suitcase Challenge

The activity can be done on paper or practically using items that you have at home.

To complete the activity, you will have to apply your understanding of combining groups from last week. If you need to, recap this work from last week to help you.

You have three different groups of objects that you need to pack into your suitcase so I would do one group at a time, having a break in between each one. A good idea would be to pack a suitcase a day, ready for your mission into space!

Space Worksheet Challenge
Read the challenge cards, identify how many groups you have and use your Maths skills to find out how many space items there are altogether! You can do this on the worksheet or do it practically like last week.

Week 13: W/C 15th June

Hello FS2!

It was fantastic to see some of you last week and I was so proud of how well you settled into the new routine. For those of you learning at home, it has been fantastic to see you continue to work so hard. I know Mrs Skilbeck has been so impressed with all your hard work and efforts. This week we have a new home learning grid with a range of new and exciting activities linked to Beegu and space. We also have a new Active Learning Grid for you to choose some activities from, keeping you fit and learning at the same time.

Under week 13, please also find additional activities to support those of you that have requested more for your child to do, please pick and choose from these activities. As I have already said to you all, do what works best for you and your child. I look forward to seeing what you have been getting up to on Tapestry.

I hope you all enjoy another great week and I can’t wait to see what you have all been up to!

Miss Collier

RE

Before you begin this weeks learning do a short session where you recap the learning that you have done so far on the Church, focusing on the two areas below. Use the resources under Weeks 11 and 12 to support you on this.

1. The Church represents God’s family.
2. The learning around St Joseph’s Church

If you need to, recap any areas of learning to ensure that they are embedded.

Then in a second session, explain that this week we are going to think about people who look after Church when it is normally open.

Have a discussion with your child around the following points:

1.Who looks after your house? How do they look after it?
2. Who looks after school? How do they look after it?
3. Who looks after church? How do they look after it?

What is your role in looking after each place?

Normally we would ask Mrs Gray who does look after St Joseph’s Church, to tell us more about her role. Sadly, we cannot do this. However, I would like you to write some questions down that you would like to ask that we can save for next time we see her.

How many questions can you come up with? Can you send me a picture of your questions on Tapestry or record yourself asking them?

Finally in a third session, make a card or a picture at home to say a big thank you, to those that look after St Joseph’s Church for us. Think carefully about the picture you draw and why and then about what message you would like to write. I look forward to seeing them on Tapestry!

Maths

Combining Groups of Objects
This week we are going to move onto something new, where you will apply what you already know. The new concepts that we are going to look at will require you to use your knowledge of addition and of your 2’s, 5’s and 10’s timetables.

If you think that you still need to do a bit more work on your addition or timetables then please complete the activities below first.

Counting in 2’s Space SongFocus on 0-20

Counting in 5’s Space SongFocus on 0-50

Counting in 10’s Space SongFocus on 0-100

Something to remember!
Each song is sang by someone with an American accent, so the way they say each number is slightly different to how we say them. Remember to say each number as you know them and if you are not sure, ask an adult at home.

Space Addition

Can you help Beegu to complete the addition sentences?

Addition on a Number Line

Combining Groups of Objects
This learning should be done across the week, in as many contexts as you can so that knowledge is built up and applied.

For your first session you could ask your child to gather objects from around your home and at first focus on putting them into 5 groups of 2.

Draw circles onto a sheet of A4 paper and get your child to put each group of objects into a circle. You could do this outside with Hoola Hoops to or by drawing circles on the ground with chalk.

Ensure your child understands that we have five groups with two objects in each.

Once you have your five groups of 2, put three groups to one side and ask your child two put two of the groups together. How many are there altogether? How would we write this an addition sum? (2 + 2 =4)

For your second session, you might repeat this but by combining 3 groups together. How many are there altogether this time? How would we write this as a sum? (2 + 2 + 2 = 6) How does this link to our 2 timetable?
Repeat with 4 and then 5 groups.

For the third session repeat the above but with groups of 5.

Then the fourth session with groups of 10.

Make sure for each session that you write down each number sentence and make the connection back to the timetable. You could even model combining the groups by counting in 2’s/5’s/10’s.

Phonics

Sentences

This week, ask an adult write down the sentences below and then cut them up so each word is separate. Adult to then read the sentence and child to read the words and build the sentence. Then take the sentence away and child to write it as independently as possible. Remember your finger spaces, capital letter and full stop.

If your child is not yet at this point, please refer back to all previous weeks and continue to complete the Sounds Write Phonic activities.

The best way to do it is a sentence a day. Have breaks when you need them, even if this is mid sentences and always finish on a positive.

Sentence 1:
The rich man had his lunch.

Sentence 2:
The duck went quack as he sat on the black rock.

Sentence 3:
The king and queen went on their swings.

Sentence 4:
Their wish was to find a shell and a fish.

Sentence 5:
The moth found a cloth to sit on.

Classroom Secrets

Complete the game below on Classroom Secrets.

Timed Challenge
Complete the sounds write reading challenges below.

How many words can you read in 30 seconds? Can you repeat it and improve your score?

Reading Challenge 1  Reading Challenge 2  Reading Challenge 3 Reading Challenge 4  Reading Challenge 5

Do one a day where you can.

Beegu
Listen to the Beegu story again and complete the book review below.
Beegu Story Book Review

Writing

Do this activity over 3 sessions.

Session 1
Now that you have read the Beegu story, talk with an adult about the following:
What questions would you like to ask Beegu about where he comes from?
How could you make him feel happy if he visited you?
How would you look after him?

Ask an adult to write down all your ideas.

Session 2
Re-read your ideas from your last session and use them to make a guide on how to look after Beegu for others, just in case he visits them.

Your guide should be in bullet points, with a minimum of 3 to be written. You can choose from the options below which paper you would like to write your guide on.

Space Paper

Once you have deiced on your bullets points, verbally form your first sentence and tell it to an adult. Then write the sentence down. Re-read the sentence to ensure it makes sense.

Session 3
Complete the guide following the advice under session 2.

Once complete either take photographs of it and send it to me on Tapestry. You could even better film yourself talking through your guide on how to look after Beegu!

Understanding the World

Go on an alien hunt!
Can you find any signs that an alien has landed near you?
Use all your senses to find possible signs of alien life:

Can you see any evidence of a spaceship that has landed or any alien foot prints?

Can you smell any smoke from the spaceship or any strange smells that might be an alien? What does an alien smell like?

Can you find any evidence that you can touch?

Can you hear any alien noises?

Write down/ draw your clues. You could even film you adventure! Let me know what you find.

Living in Space

So far you have done your own research into Space and learnt about Beegu.

This week we are going to learn more about how people live in Space before we start our own plans for a mission to Space next week!

Take a look at the video clips below that show you how real Astronauts live in space. Doing simple things such as eating, sleeping and even going to the toilet isn’t as simple as it is on Earth!

Sleeping in Space Eating in Space Going to the Toilet in Space

Once you have watched each video discuss the similarities and differences between how we do things on Earth. Then discuss why this might be.

A big clue is Gravity, do you know what that is? How could you find out more?

Expressive Arts and Design

Activity 1
Make some alien masks to wear on your alien hunt. If you do find one, they might be less scared of you if they think you are like them.

It would have been Jofest on the 20th June, where we would have all celebrated St Joseph’s on the field through a variety of activities and stalls. Sadly, this can no longer take place. However, Mrs Airey has asked for all children to still design a game that could be played at the festival, as was originally planned.

Get your thinking caps on and design (draw and label) and the film yourself playing the game with your family. I can’t wait to see all your fantastic ideas!

Week 12: W/C 8th June

Hello FS2!

A huge thank you to you all for working so hard last week as we started our space topic. I was particularly impressed with Ronan’s rocket design and labeling. I also loved to see Fleur finding our more about Spain where she visits on holiday. She drew and labelled an amazing map and I know enjoyed finding out lots of facts. Freddie also amazed me with his reading! He is using his phonics so well and is beginning to read fluently. Well done all, I can’t wait to see what you all get up to this week as we begin to focus on our first Space story called “Beegu”.

This week some of you will  be joining me back at school, for our new adventure! I am really looking forward to seeing some of of you again and look forward to seeing what the rest of you have been up to on Tapestry. From this week Mrs Skilbeck will begin to respond to your videos and pictures on Tapestry and I know that she is really looking forward to being in contact with you all. I will also be making a video whilst I am in school on Monday to show those of you that are returning what the new school day will look like in our FS2 bubble.

Under week 12 please find activities linked to the home learning grid and Beegu. Please also find additional activities to support those of you that have requested more for your child to do, please pick and choose from these activities. As I have already said to you all, do what works best for you and your child. I look forward to seeing what you have been getting up to on Tapestry.

RE

Now that you have learnt that we are all part of the Church family and why that is so special to you, we are going to learn more about St Joseph’s Church in Wetherby and why it is such an important place.

George (our class monkey) is going to help us with this! Before lock down George went on a little adventure of his own when we weren’t looking! Can you guess where he might have been?

That is right, George visited our Church, St Joseph’s in Wetherby! During his visit he got Mrs Gray to take lots of photographs of him in church, next to different things. Mrs Gray also told him lots of new things that he did not know about Church and wondered if you knew them as well.

Together me and George have made a powerpoint presentation showing you his visit. There is also some other people in it for you to talk through with your adults at home.

George’s Visit to Church

Parents please see the Powerpoint attached, across the week please go through it in four parts.

Part 1:
Recap the learning on the Church family that you did last week

Part 2:
Go through the key people on the Powerpoint and ask your child is they know who they are. Then discuss their importance and role in the Church family.

Part 3:
Go through the pictures of George and ask your child what George is next to/ looking at. After the discussion clarify any misconceptions and discuss the importance of each part

Part 4:
Look at the pictures of the different Churches and explain that Christians all around the world visit their Church like we do St Joseph’s. Emphasis that everyone is accepted into God’s family. Finally say the Our Father.

Extension:
Make a collage using different materials of a cross the symbolize the Church family.

Repeating Patterns

I am so impressed with your amazing pattern work that you did last week! It was great to see so many of you use different items at home to continue and create your own repeating patterns.

If you now feel confident with this you can move onto the activities below, where you now move from physical objects to pictorial representations which means pictures. See how many of the activities below you can complete!

If you need to, you can still make the patterns with objects from home to help you.

If you think you still need a bit more practice with using objects to complete patterns, have a look back at last weeks activities.

Activity 1:
Complete the repeating pattern by colouring in the squares to make the stripy scarf.

Take your time, carefully cutting out each picture before you make your pattern.

Shapes

Last week you focused on 2D shapes. This week we are going to look at 3D shapes. We have done lots of 3D shapes in class but it was a while ago now so hopefully the activities below will help you to get them stuck into your brains!

Task 1:
Have a look at the 3D shape mat to remind yourself of some of the shapes we have looked at before. Now take the mat on a shape hunt around your house and garden where you need to find as many of each shape as you can. You can then either take a photograph of each item or draw it and upload it to Tapestry.

Week 11: W/C 1st June

I hope you have all enjoyed your half term in the sunshine! This half term our topic is going to be Space. This week will be an introduction to the topic where you will start to learn more about Outer Space.

Did any of you see the Spacex Launch rocket on Saturday night? I just caught a glimpse of it as it passed under the moon.

Please also find additional activities to support those of you that have requested more for your child to do, please pick and choose from these activities. As I have already said to you all, do what works best for you and your child. I look forward to seeing what you have been getting up to on Tapestry.

P.S. I hope you enjoy our Happy Compilation!

RE

For home learning this week, you could introduce our new topic “The Church” to your child by discussing times that you have visited Church as a family. Can they remember how it feels to go to Church? Have they been with extended family for a special occasion? How does it feel when it is quiet? What about when the congregation are singing? What does the Priest wear? Have they noticed different colours? Do they have a favourite hymn that they like to sing? How does this compare to being in a family? Try to support your child to understand that it’s about a family/group of people belonging together.

On another day, you could talk to your child about their different ‘families’ they belong to, for example, their own family, school, clubs, etc. Help them to see that they belong to many different groups and how wonderful this is. Explain that we are all part of God’s family together. You could let them draw a picture of who is in each group or put names on post its and group them.

Another activity to extend this is to support your child to start to know how the Church family they belong to began. There is a story below to help with this.reading the story below. Please emphasis that the story is from the Bible but it has been adapted so it is not the word of God. Church Story link

Now show your child a picture of St Joseph’s Church in Wetherby and explain that this is where we go to worship and is a symbol of God’s family. Ask your child what they do when they go to Church. Maybe they could draw a picture of Canon Nunan.

Another discussion to have with your child is what it means to be part of God’s family. Share your feelings with your child and how this feels to belong and the sort of activities you get involved in which the Church to be a family. Other discussions may be around God caring for us, he loves us, we go to Church, we celebrate Christmas, Easter, weddings, Christenings, we pray to him, looks after us and our family when poorly, makes us happy etc.

Finally, get your child to draw St Joseph’s church using the picture above to help them. Then ask them to write a sentence about what being part of God’s family means to them. Let them practise this in words first and extend them orally as you feel appropriate and then support with sounding out when they are writing too.

Maths

For home learning in maths this week, there are some practical activities to support your child to continue exploring maths using practical, everyday equipment. I have included some extension steps too for you to try, but please remember to take it at your own pace. These activities benefit from repetition so please feel free to do this, and don’t move on unless you feel it is the right next step for your child. I have also included some worksheet tasks too which are there again to access as you wish. I know some of you find these useful but it is totally up to you to access any home learning tasks as it suits your child and family circumstances.

Repeating Patterns

It would be good if you could introduce repeating patterns to your child using objects around your home. Children tend to really enjoy making repeating patterns and you can get really creative with items from the natural world or in the house for them to make these. You’ll be amazed what you can find in your house to do this and I would love to see some interesting photos of what you and your child come up with!

The best way to work on repeating patterns is to build up patterns over a number of days. Each day revisit the first patterns made previously and then introduce another one.

Start with a simple repeating pattern that involves just two objects like the one I’ve made below. We have done these in class so they should pick this up quickly. You start the pattern and ask your child to carry it on. Then you could challenge your child to make their own pattern where it alternatives between 2 different objects. If they find this tricky, you can take over and start the pattern for them to build their confidence. Try to have a lovely range of items available when you do this like lego bricks, coloured pencils, balls, etc. You can make repeated patterns using anything so tune into your child’s interests and see what happens!

Then, in another practical maths session, you could progress onto more complex repeating patterns like the ones below. Try one at a time and say the pattern out loud as you point to each objects. Again, you start the pattern and ask them to continue it. If you feel your child is ready for it, let them make their own more complex pattern.

Once your child is confident ask them to create their own repeating pattern, where you have to continue it and ask them to explain it to you.

Shapes

The children have learnt lots of shapes in class and I thought it would be nice for them to show you at home how great they are with them! See the tasks below, how many can you complete?

Task 1:
Sort the objects into shape groups only pages 1-4. If you could like to learn some new shapes have ago at page 5 too! Shape sorting

Task 2:
Colour in the 2D shape pictures and name the shape as you colour them. Shape colouring

Extension:
How many sides does the shape have?
How many vertices does it have?

Task 3:
You could complete the game on classroom secrets.

Phonics

Please focus on completing at least one of the Phonics activity from the pack below a day.

Week 9: W/C 18th May

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) Week

This week the whole school is having a PSHE themed week. Here is something extra special to mark the start of our themed week.

From speaking to you all it is clear that our children need some support managing their feelings and emotions in what is a very new and difficult time for us all. This week is about encouraging your child to talk about how they are feeling and for us all to be a little kinder to ourselves. Therefore, the activities this week will all be linked to children’s emotions and mental wellbeing with the aim being to boost their mood by having lots of fun and to give them tools; through activities, to use to enable them to manage their emotions.

In addition to the new activities grid and the information below, please take a look at our new Social, Emotional, Mental Health (SEMH) page. You will find the page under the parents tab on the website. The page includes a broad range of fun and interesting activities, along with resources to help children deal with situations they find stressful, and teaches them how to regulate their feelings and build resilience. On the page you will find a Virtues Calendar. Please get your child to choose 5 from the Menu and do one each day. The activities are designed to encourage kindness to ourselves and others.

Please begin the week by watching my video on Tapestry.

Then please find below activities linked to the Homework Grid below.

The most importantly this week is to have fun! I hope you smile lots, laugh often and always be kind to yourself and others.

I look forward to seeing what you have been up to on Tapestry this week!

Miss Collier

Cake Spillage!

Please watch my video on Tapestry and complete the activity as explained.

Super me Shield

Choose a shield from the link, print it off and draw/ write all the things that make you amazing! You can draw anything that makes you feel good inside. It can be things you are good at or things you enjoy. Ask your family what they think makes you super and add those things on until it is completely full! Once it is completed put it somewhere where you will see it everyday. Then each day you can have a look at it and remind yourself why you are so fantastic.

Shield Template

Mind Jar

This activity must be supported and supervised by an adult at all times.

Follow the instructions below to make a Mind Jar.

The idea is that once the jar is made it can sit in an importance place at home. Then, the next time you feel angry or frustrated you can give the jar a good shake and watch the glitter fall to the bottom of the jar, which should help you to relax and feel calmer.

Maths Game

This activity has been inspired by a member of FS2’s Burn to Learn Maths game last week. He looked like he was having so much fun, keeping fit and doing Maths all at once. See if you can come up with an active Maths game in your home. If Maths is too tricky you could do phonics instead. I can’t wait to see your games!

Sound Hunt

Go on a walk and complete a sound hunt.

Shut your eyes, what can you hear?

Listen really carefully and draw what you hear, either in the moment or when you get home.

Emotions Board Game

Roll the dice and move along the board. Each emotion that you land on share a time that you have felt this emotion.
Emotions Board Game

Gratitude Game

Follow the instructions and play the game with your family. There is lots that we have to be grateful for, sometimes we need to remind ourselves of this.

Gratitude Game

Proud Moments

This week please all try and share something with me on Tapestry that you are proud of. I will then gradually add them to the proud moments page so that each time you go on there is something new to see from your friends. I am incredibly proud of you all and can’t wait to see more proud moments.

Act of Kindness

Think of something kind that you can do for someone who lives in your house.
Some ideas:
Make them a card or presents from the things you have at home
Give them a hug
Do a job for them like tidy your room or help look after the garden

I am sure you will be able to come up with lots more ideas!

Once you have completed your act of kindness, think about how you think it made the other person feel. How did it make you feel?

RE
May: The Month of Mary

The month of May is dedicated to our Mother, May. Whilst we honour Mary every day throughout the year, through prayer, reflection and song, during the month of May, Mary is specially honoured and there are many ways in which we can do this from home.

Please talk to your child about Mary, who she was and why we honour her.
You could also say the Hail Mary with your child. We say this prayer in school so they will be familiar with it.

Then as your activity get your child to either draw, paint or make a representation of Mary and write words around her to describe her based on your discussions.

Week 8: W/C 11th May

Please find lots of additional activities, worksheets and documents to support you and your child’s learning at home.

E-Safety

This week please remind your child of the “STOP, BLOCK, TELL” message that you shared with your child when we started learning at home.

The simple message is designed to keep your child safe when learning online. The message teaches them that if they see something they are unsure or do not like whilst using their tablet or computer they STOP what they are doing BLOCK it by turning it off or coming away from it and TELL an adult straight away.

Please also ensure that you reiterate to your child that they must ask to go on any devices before they do so and be supervised at all times.

PSED

Our Emotions.

On Monday I will be uploading a video to Tapestry where I will be reading the story “Look Who’s Here” by Louise Shanagher and Rose Finerty. Please watch the video with your child, answer the questions I ask in the video and then complete the follow up work below.

Sadly, the sheets are unable to be saved and printed. However, if you follow the link to the website you can have it on a full screen and complete the activities on your own piece of paper. https://www.louiseshanagher.com/mindfully-me

RE

This week, I would like you to recap last week’s learning on the story about when Jesus appeared to his Disciples.
How did Jesus give the Disciples the gifts of Joy and Peace?

This week the focus is going to be knowing that Jesus goes back to his Father in heaven.

Ask your child to tell you different ways that you say goodbye to someone. Do this in the context of someone coming around for tea and then going home.

What might you do or say?

Then explain that today’s story is about when Jesus said goodbye to his friends when he went back to Heaven to be with his Father. Recap who this is (God).

Read the story and then answer the questions below. Ascension Story

How do you think Jesus felt?
How do you think God felt?
How do you think the disciples felt?
What might God say to Jesus?

Explain that this is called the “Ascension”.
Make the link with the Holy Spirit and making the sign of the cross where we say, “In the name of the Father (God) and of the Son (Jesus) and of the Holy Spirit”.

Once you have discussed the story and ensured that your child understands that Jesus went back to Heaven, you could ask your child to make an Ascension collage using materials that you have at home. Once the collage is made, your child could now try and write speech bubbles linked to what they think each person might have said (Jesus, God, The disciples). See my Collage below!

Maths

Continue your focus on halving this week by completing the activities below in the order that they come, as each activity gets more difficult.

If your child seems to be struggling with halving this week, go back and repeat the learning from last week.

The main message from the learning is “Half is when you split a number into two equal parts”.

Activity 1
Bee Hive Halving

Activity 2
Ladybird Halving
There are three differentiated worksheets. Have a look and chose the one that you think is most appropriate to your child’s understanding of halving. If they are less confident, they can try the first page, if they are developing their confidence, they can try the second page and if they are very confident, try the third page.

If your child completes the one you choose initially, progress onto the next. If they do the third page with ease change the numbers so they are in between 20 and 30.

Activity 3
Play the game below on classroom secrets.

Phonics

Continue to focus on the sounds and tricky words that you identified that your child needs to continue to work on from your phonics assessment and complete the below activities.

Activity 1:
Tricky Words
Chalk your tricky words outside either on the floor or a wall. Then if you have a water pistol get your adult to shout a word and you have to shoot it with water. If you do not have a water pistol you can either splat the word with your had, jump on it or throw a ball at it.

Activity 2:
Sounds
Adult to hide sounds around the house or garden that build words to make up a sentence. You might want to write the sounds from the same word in different colours to make it easier. You could challenge your child by keeping them all in the same colour but they may need more support with this.

Reading

Complete the three reading activities below on Classroom Secrets.

Re-listen to the story “Eat your Greens Goldilocks”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYLoIgR4Bx0

Using the work you created last week, make a Healthy Food poster for Goldilocks telling her the types of food that are good to eat and why. Things you can check to make sure you have included: drawings, labels and at least one simple sentence.

Understanding the World

Remind your child of the British Values that you have looked at so far.

This week focus on “Mutual Respect”. Explain that this means that we accept that we are all different and see this as a great thing! We accept that not everyone will think or believe in the same things that we do but that we listen to the views and beliefs of others and accept that is what they believe.

Discuss what this means for your child. How do they show you respect at home and how do you show them respect?

Make a list of how this respect is shown and ask your child to draw different people that they show respect to, discussing why and how they do this.

Expressive Arts and and Design

Make Goldilocks Character Spoons and use them to act out your favourite version of Goldilocks!

Please find lots of additional activities, worksheets and documents to support you and your child’s learning at home.

RE

Recap last week’s learning on the story about Mary Magdalene.

Explain that today we are going to listen to another adapted story from the Bible, that helps us to understand how Jesus gave the gifts of Joy and Peace.

Explain that this story happened after Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene and is about when Jesus appeared to the Disciples.

Recap who the Disciples were (Jesus’s friends).

Read the story together and then discuss the questions below.

How do you think Jesus felt?
How do you think the disciples felt at different points in the story?
Write down key words for both Jesus’s emotions and the Disciples.
How did Jesus give the Disciples the gifts of Joy and Peace?

Then as the activity, draw the Disciples behind the door and Jesus appearing in the room. Label the picture and write a simple sentence about how either Jesus or the Disciples may have felt.

Maths

Subtraction on a Number Line Learning Steps Recap

Number Line

Halving

This week introduce your child to the concept of halving. Explain that you are going to use what we know about subtraction to help us half numbers between 0 and 10.

Explain that halving is when you split a number into two equal parts.

Use the part part whole model to show this.

For this only use even numbers that can be split into two whole parts.

Gather 10 house hold objects and either print the part, part, whole model or make one with either two plates, two pieces of paper or chalk two circles on the ground outside.

Put all the objects in the whole circle to begin with and get  your child to write the number on a piece of paper and put it in this circle with the objects.

Then model sharing the items, one at a time into the two part circles until there are none left. Then model counting how many items there are in one group and emphasising that one group is half. Then write this number down, so for 10 it would be 5.

Then model writing this as a subtraction sentence. Eg. 10 – 5 =

Repeat this with 2,4,6 and 8 sets of objects letting your child have a go, clarifying any misconceptions as you go.

The main message from the learning is “Half is when you split a number into two equal parts”.

Phonics

Focus on the sounds and tricky words that you identified that your child needs to continue to work on from your phonics assessment and complete the below activities.

Activity 1:
Tricky Words
Each day chose one of the tricky words and come up with a simple sentence including that word that your child can write.

Activity 2:
Sounds
Complete the word building activity with words that include sounds that you have identified that your child needs to work on.

Activity 3:
Write out a sentence including the sounds and tricky words that you are focusing on and get your child to read it independently.

Reading

Listen to the story “Eat your Greens Goldilocks” and answer the following questions verbally.

What did you like about the story?
What was similar and what was different about this version compared to the traditional story?
Which story do you prefer, this one or the traditional version? Explain why.

Play the game below on Classroom Secrets.

Writing

Once you have read the story look back and identify all the foods that Goldilocks ate at the three bears house, making a list of them all. You can draw them too if this helps.

Once you have identified them decide if you think on the whole Goldilocks ate healthy or unhealthy foods.

Then write at least one simple sentence explaining your decision using the word because.

Half Lined Paper

Understanding the World

Remind your child of the British Values that you have looked at so far.

This week focus on “Individual Liberty”. Explain that this means that we are able to express ourselves and do as we please as long as we abide by the laws that you looked at last week.

Discuss what this means for your child. How do they have individual liberty?

Make links to us all being unique, having our own likes, dislikes and interests and the freedom to express them as long as we do not offend anyone.

Make links to Tolerance of others and what this means.

Vegetable Dictionary

Expressive Arts and and Design

Find a recipe that you really like to bake or cook with your family and change one aspect of it. This could be changing an ingredient, adding one in or taking one away.

Is it a healthy recipe? Why/ why not?

Do you think Goldilocks and the Three Bears would like it? Why/ why not?

Make the recipe and then with an adult write it up and add either drawings or photographs to it.

The FOSJ are hoping to make a school cook book and if you would like your recipe to be included please email it to FOSJ@Outlook.com.

Physical Development

In order to be fit and healthy we need to eat well and have a good understanding of how food helps fuel our bodies.

This week please explore the “Food Glorious Food” PowerPoint that has been developed by Mrs Reddiex and complete the activities.

Week 6: W/C 27th April

Please find lots of additional activities, worksheets and documents to support you and your child’s learning at home.

RE

Parents set up a little surprise for your child. Once they have had it ask them how it made them feel. Write down their responses.

Then explain that you are going to read them a story about Mary Magdalene that has been taken from the Bible (not the word of God as it has been adapted) about when one of Jesus’s friends also had a surprise.

Once the story has been read ask the following questions:
How do you think Mary Magdalene might have felt about this surprise?
Which part of the story tells you that?
Is it similar of different to how you felt about your surprise?
Why might that be?

Once the questions have been discussed make an Angel with any materials that you have around the house. As your child is making the Angel ask them why they think the Angels were in the story. Clarify any misconceptions.

Maths

Continue your focus on doubling this week by completing the activities below in the order that they come, as each activity gets more difficult.

If your child seems to be struggling with doubling this week, go back and repeat the learning from last week.

Activity 1
Doubling Play dough Mats
If you do not have play dough you can use objects from around the house instead.

Activity 2
Ladybird Doubling
Complete the worksheet by completing the doubling number sentences.

Activity 3
Visit Classroom Secrets and play the doubling games.

Phonics

Focus on the sounds and tricky words that you identified that your child needs to continue to work on from your phonics assessment and complete the below activities.

Activity 1:
Tricky Words
Have the words on pieces of paper and do a quick flash card activity where you show them to your child and say them together. Then play snap with the words, saying each word as it is put down.

If your child is struggling to remember the words, focus on one or two and ensure they are learnt before moving on to any others.

Activity 2:
Sounds
Focus on one sound at a time. Go around the house and find items that start with that sound. For each item, you find get your child to write the sounds down on a piece of paper and put it on the item. Once you have found them all go back around the house collecting the sounds that they have written down, saying the sound each time they collect one.

Activity 3:
Using your focus tricky words and the items that you found in the house starting with your focus sound, come up with a sentence for you to read to your child and for them to write independently. Ensure the sentence only includes sounds that your child has learnt so far so that they are able to write it accurately and independently.

Reading

Activity 1:
Complete the Reading activity by matching the sentence to the picture.

Activity 2:
Complete the matching games below on “Classroom Secrets”.

Writing

Re-read “The true story of the Three Little Pigs”.

Decide which version of the story you prefer, this one or the traditional version (re-read this if necessary).

Then write about which book you prefer and why, using the word “because”. Half Lined Paper

Use the writing tips below to support your child with this.

“Tell me the sentence you want to write.”
“What do we always start a sentence with?” (A capital letter)
“What is the first/ next word in your sentence?”
“What is the first/next/last sound in the word?” (If you child is struggling to hear a sound get them to say the word slowly and model this to them).
“Remember you need a finger space between each word”
“What do we need to put to show that we have finished our sentence?” (A full stop).
“Re-read your work to ensure it makes sense”.

Understanding the World

British Values

Remind your child of the British Values that you looked at last week and recap what Democracy is.

This week focus on “The Rule of Law”. Explain that we have laws which we all must abide by.

British Values Poster

Rule of Law British Values Display Poster

Ask your child if they know of any and give a couple of examples.

Explain that Laws are like rules. Remind your child of the rules that we have in our class at school that the children came up with in September.

Explain that rules or laws are in place to make sure that everyone is treated fairly and just (discuss the meaning of these two words).

Together discuss if you have any rules at home.
What are they?
Why do you have them?

Decide together if you think of other rules would be good to have. Once decided write them down and decorate them before putting them in a prominent place in your house where they can be referred to.

Rules work best if they are positively worded. For example, “We are always kind to one another” would work more effectively then “We are not nasty to each other”.

Expressive Arts and and Design

Create the puppets and re-tell your favourite version of The Three Little pigs story with them.

Week 5: W/C 20th April

Please find lots of additional activities, worksheets and documents to support you and your child’s learning at home.

RE

This half term we would have been starting the RE topic “New Life”.

This week refer back to the learning you have already done on Easter Sunday. Reiterate the message that Jesus rose from the dead and because of this we experience joy, making Easter a happy celebration.

Give the children the attached picture of Mary, tell them that the picture is of Mary and ask them who Mary was (Jesus’s Mummy). Mary

Ask your child to think about and discuss with you, how they think Mary will have felt on Easter Sunday and why. Adult to write the key words around Mary. No answers will be wrong, as long as your child can justify their answers, linking back to what they have learnt so far.

Follow this with a prayer.

Thank you God for Jesus,
is the prayer we say.
Thank you God for Jesus,
alive on Easter day.

Then go on a Spring walk looking and listening for signs of new life. Either take photographs of them or write them down. How many signs of new life can you find?

Maths

This week introduce your child to the concept of doubling. Explain that you are going to use what we know about adding to help us double numbers between 0 and 10.

+     =

Start by showing your child the + and = symbols. Ask them to remind you what they mean. Clarify any misconceptions.

If your child is struggling with this get together as many plastic cups as you have and stick onto each either a + or =. Place all the cups on the floor so they are stood up. Then explain to your child that you are going to time 20 seconds and in that time they must put them all the other way round, saying each symbol as they do so. To make it more of a competition you or a sibling can go round and have to put them the other way round. At the end of the 20 seconds whoever has the most turned around their way wins. Get your child to count them to find out who is the winner.

Once your child is confident with the meaning of the + and = symbols, recap addition on a number line if you have not already done so from last week.

Then explain that doubling is when we add two numbers that are the same to each other. Role a dice or use a number randomiser online to demonstrate this. Get your child to role the dice/ click the number randomiser (numbers 0-10) and model writing the sum to show how to double the number. For example, if they get 6 you would write
6 + 6 = highlighting that doubling is when you add the same number together. Repeat this to demonstrate and start to ask your child to tell you what you should write.

Once they understand this concept get them to solve the addition sentences using the counting on method.

If you get double zero explain that 0 represents nothing, you can’t get 0 objects so
0 + 0 = 0.

Phonics

Complete the phonics assessment by simply ticking or crossing each sound or word to indicate if they got it correct or not. Do the assessment in a quiet place and take as many breaks as needed. It does not have to be done in one go. Phonics Assessment

Print two copies, one from your child to read from and one for you to tick/ cross on. This will give you an indication of which sounds and tricky words you need to focus on when completing the activities below. If you are unsure of how the sounds should be said, familiarize yourself with them by watching the link below.

Mr Thorne’s Phonics

Activity 1:
Focusing on the Unit/ Sounds need write the words onto pieces of paper and get your child to read as many as they can in 1min.

Activity 2:
Read each word to your child and get them to sound it out and write it independently.

Activity 3:
Come up with simple sentences using the words and get them to write it independently.

Reading

Listen to the story “The true story of the Three Little Pigs” and answer the following questions verbally:

What did you like about the story?

Do you believe the wolf’s story? Why/ why not?

Which story do you prefer, this one or the traditional version? Explain why.

Writing

Once you have read the story “The true story of the Three Little Pigs” print the pictures from the story and put them in the correct order, retelling the story as you do so.

Pictures to sequence

Then for as many of the pictures as you can (can be done over a few sessions) write a sentence underneath explaining what is happening in that part of the story using the lined paper. Half Lined Paper

British Values

Once you have explained what British values are to your child focus on Democracy this week. Explain that we live in a democracy which means that we all get to vote for how we want the country to be run and by which government.

British Values Poster

Democracy-British-Values-Display-Poster

Consider ways you can demonstrate democracy in your house. You could have a vote on which film you want to watch or what you have for tea. You could even make voting cards and the children tick which option they would like to vote for. You could then count the votes together.

Expressive Arts and and Design

What new inventions can you design and then make using items from around your house? Use the design sheet to help you plan your ideas. Design Sheet

Physical Development

Maths

Number Bonds to 10.

All the children have worked hard on addition of single digit numbers. This week make the link between this learning and introduce Number Bonds to 10.

Explain that any two numbers that add together to make ten are number bonds of 10.

Demonstrate this by collecting 10 objects. Then use the “Part, part, whole model” (see link) to find out which numbers go together to make ten. Part part whole model

In the largest circle write number 10 and explain that the two smaller circle are two parts that make 10 which is the whole. Then ask your child to split the objects into the two part circles, randomly.

Get them to count how many objects are on each part and write the number down. Then get them to count how many there are altogether emphasizing that the two parts make the whole. (See example below).

Then model recording this as a sum using the numbers that they have written down.  For example, if they have put 8 items in one part and 2 in another you would write 8 + 2 = 10

Repeat this by putting different amounts of objects into each part until all the number bonds pairs have been found. Emphasis that 10 can be made in lots of different ways and that these numbers are number bond pairs.

How many different number bond pairs to 10 can you find?

Once all pairs have been found your child can colour in a number bonds Rainbow. As they colour in each part get them to say the number bond pairs. For example “5 add 5 equals 10”. Number Bonds Rainbow Colouring

Phonics

Continue to work on Unit 11 and complete at least one of the phonics activities a day with your child, getting them to read and write in each activity.
Activity cards Initial Code

Reading

Read and write all your tricky words from Unit 1 to Unit 11 and time how long it takes you to read them all to an adult.

Writing

Draw your favourite part of your families Easter celebrations.

Once drawn write about what you did to celebrate Easter at home. All children to attempt at least a simple sentence. If your child does this with ease encourage them to write a couple of simple sentences and where possible use words such as “because”, “then”, “next”, “and” or “but” to extend their sentences.

Adults to use the phrases below and the phonics guide to support your child.

Use the lined paper to do this on. Half Lined

Understanding the World

Money

Following on from last weeks shopping activity please find two different simple money worksheets.

The first simply requires your child to match the coin to the numeral.

Coin recognition

If you have coins at home this would be useful to have out for your child to have a look at and do the additional activity of sorting them into sets.

The second activity requires your child to add the coins together to work out how much each ice cream costs. The first sheet just needs your child to count how many one pence pieces there are. The second two sheets will need more support, identifying which coins there are and writing out the sum that it requires before solving it.

Ice Cream Coins

Please print the number lines below to support your child to add the numbers together. Remind them to jump up the number line if they are adding and to count the jumps not the numbers.

Writing

Parents, read the story of “Jack and the Beanstalk” to your child. If you do not have the book at home, please see the link below to a PowerPoint version that you can either read from a screen or print out. Jack and the Beanstalk PP

Once the story has been read, get your child to choose their favourite part and put some actions to it. If you can, record this and add it to Tapestry!

Once actions have been added, provide your child with the pictures in the link below and get them to sequence the story.

Pictures to sequence

Once the story is sequenced get your child to choose their favourite part of the story and stick the corresponding picture onto the lined paper (link below).

Half lined paper

Write a short sentence under the picture explaining what is happening at that part of the story. Do this at their level. For some children this may be writing a simple, two worded caption, others a short simple sentence and others a longer, complex sentence using the word and, because or but.

Understanding the World

This week would have been the second week of “Living in Leeds” fortnight in school. With an adult do some online research either on a computer or tablet to find out some facts about Wetherby and then Leeds. Once you have collected your facts compare them and what you know of both place. Then make a poster or a video together explaining the similarities and differences between Leeds and Wetherby.

Can you print and complete the missing number sheet? Missing numbers

Caterpillar Ordering https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/caterpillar-ordering

Estimating Amounts
Go into the garden and collect around 20 natural objects (sticks, leaves etc). Then give your child a random amount of the objects and ask them to estimate how many there are. Get them to write the number down and then count the objects to check and write down the correct amount. Emphasis that they do not have to get the number exactly write. A good estimation is a couple of numbers out. For example, 6 sticks and they estimate 4 or 8.

Measuring Time
The children have been focusing on measuring how long different activities take in seconds and minuets. Please encourage your child to time different activities they do at home such as drawing a picture or building a model. Encourage your child to record how long it took them to do the different activities and then order them in terms of which took the longest to the shortest.

Money
Please introduce your children to some different types of money at home (coins, notes, bank cards) and explain that they each have a different value. Then set up a shop where you and your child can label up items with prices and buy and sell them to one another.

Phonics

Please follow the below link to Phonic activities that can be done at home. There is also a link to the sounds that we have covered so far with example words to use in the activities. All children have covered units 1-10. These documents have already been sent out to all parents in Autumn Term following our Phonics Show and Share.
