  • The Stone Age is divided in 3 distinct periods.
  • The Palaeolithic period or old stone age (30 000 BC-10 000BC), The Mesolithic period or middle stone age (10 000 BC-8000 BC) and the Neolithic Period or New Stone Age (8000 BC- 3000BC).
  • Following this, was the Bronze Age (Bronze was made from a mixture of copper and tin) and then the Iron Age.
  • Stone Henge is a ring of huge standing stones in Wiltshire built during the stone age: approximately 2500 BC (Neolithic period) and know some of the theories about the reasons for Stone Henge but also know why there isn’t evidence of how these got there.
  • The stone age village of Skara Brae is an important source of evidence for learning about this time in history because it is Europe’s most intact settlement that we know about.
  • Due to a lack of evidence of a time period so long ago, significant people are not known from the stone age.
  • Flint is a type of quartz rock used for making tools such as knives, scrapers and arrowheads.
  • Flint was used to make fire for cooking and warmth.
  • People in the stone age were known as hunters/gatherers and is someone who lives by hunting, fishing and gathering wild food. Know why people in the Stone Age were hunter gatherers.
