It’s the beginning of the week and let’s take a moment to count our blessings. What are you grateful for today? Who are you grateful to today and what for? How was your weekend? Tell me one lovely thing that you did and send it to me on Showbie as I’d love to hear what you’ve been up to.

Worship at Home

Click here to go to our school Gospel page.

Here are some songs for your home worship this week.

Please enjoy listening to the songs for your worship this week. Let the words flood your mind and fill your hearts as you worship.

The first song is a new one which I heard for the first time this week at Church online. All the Church members worship from home and it’s lovely to see all their faces on the Zoom gallery every Sunday morning. This week, there was even a dog included in the worship! See if you like this song.

The second song for your worship at home is one that reminds me of class worship. It’s been such a long time since we have been able to sing during worship together, but I still remember how lovely it sounds when we do!

Mental Health:

Make sure you allow time this week to keep your mind happy and healthy. Here are some inspirational quotes for you to consider this week.

The best thing you will ever do it believe in yourself!

One of the secrets of life is to make stepping stones out of stumbling blocks.

Make yourself a priority once in a while. It’s not selfish; it’s necessary!

Here are some links below to support you with ideas. If you haven’t tried Yogabugs yet, why don’t you give it a go by clicking the link below. Or you might fancy a sports theme challenge instead so I have put a link to Premier League Primary Stars below too which is a great resource for you to make the most of. Let me know how you get on.

AM Session 1: Maths

L.O. To consolidate knowledge of shapes and angles.

This morning’s lesson aims to consolidate or bring together all our learning about 2D shapes and missing angles. We need to be able to use all the facts and methods we have learnt in different ways and with a mixture of questions. Everyone should start by watching the video tutorial and completing the starter tasks with Ms Crolla.

The worksheet provides lots of problem solving and reasoning questions. Everyone should complete the first 6 problems. If you are feeling very confident, some of you may want to start at question 5 and go right through to the end. Work through what you can. It should take at least half an hour to watch the tutorial and then stop after about half an hour on the problems.

Monday 1st February 2021

This week, it is Children’s Mental Health Week. The theme of this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week is Express Yourself. Expressing yourself is about finding ways to share feelings, thoughts, or ideas, through creativity. This could be through art, music, writing and poetry, dance and drama, photography and film, and doing activities that make you feel good. During your free afternoon session this week, you may like to choose some of the activities from the suggested grid over on the main Home Learning page. It looks like this:

Another fantastic week of home learning has passed and you’ve continued to prove that you are active, resilient and life-long learners. You have now idea how proud you make all the staff in Year 6!

More of you have made it to the Shout out page so check it out now.  If you make it onto the Shout Out page, you’ll get a dip in my teacher bucket when we get back to school plus 50 house points to bank too!

Please remember that tutorials will only become available on the day so you can’t go and watch a tutorial for Friday, for example, until Friday. Also, I am now making the tutorials available by the click of a black button beside the work so you don’t need to keep going backwards or scrolling to find the tutorial pages. I hope you find this useful.

Worship at Home

Here are some songs for your home worship this week.

Random Object Challenge

Don’t forget about the random object challenge. It’s never too late to start! See if you can spot the random object in my tutorials. The random object can appear at any time during the teacher tutorials. You need to record the random objects that you see using the grid below. If you manage to spot all the random objects in the tutorials up to half term, you’ll get your name put into a pot, and a winner will be revealed and will win a prize.

Make sure you watch the tutorials carefully and listen! If you spot it, don’t tell anyone as you want to increase your chance of winning for being a good listener and being observant.

AM Session 1: Maths

L.O. To write decimals as fractions and percentages.

Todays maths lesson is building on your skills from last week when you learned to write decimals as fractions. We’ll quickly revisit this as a warm up and then we’ll look at how to take it to the next step of turning the fraction into percentages. Please watch my tutorial and join in the tasks through the tutorial.

The tutorial is quite long and you’ll be working throughout it, so after the tutorial, only complete 1 page of the varied fluency worksheets from the pack below. Keep the rest of the varied fluency (VF) and the problem solving and reasoning (PSR) for tomorrow.

AM Session 2: English/Guided Reading

L.O. To maintain reading comprehension skills.

This week, we are going to have a lesson based around reading skills so that you don’t get rusty. You did so well in school up until Christmas working on this skill, so we need to keep it bubbling over with some practise from time to time. Remember to join in as I teach and complete all the tasks within the tutorial and at the end. Send your tutorial notes to me as well as your completed worksheets please.

The worksheets can be found below for this.

PM Session 1 & 2: DT

L.O. To practise tying different knots to make a raft.

For this lesson, you will need patience! Do you remember when we had a STEM day in school and you learnt about buoyancy? We made vessels using one piece of card, one piece of foil and sticky tape. You had to make the best vessels you could to hold the most marbles and you all had exactly the same amount of resources. Some of your vessels sunk after about 25 marbles but some of you managed to build a vessel which held over 200 marbles! Here are some photos to remind you of that exciting day when you learnt all about the role of a marine engineer and how girls make great engineers as well as boys. You’ll need to use this knowledge today.  You have the full afternoon to work on this task as it should take you about an hour to master the knots before you even start making your raft.

You have a range of different knots to practise tying. Don’t rush this section as you are less likely to succeed in the next stage which is to make your own raft. You can only use sticks and string to make your raft. Following the instructions below.

Click here for instructions for different knots.

Once you have made your raft, you need to sail it in your bath and take photos. See how much cargo it will hold too before it sinks. Then make observations about the surface area of your raft and how you could improve your design to make it hold more cargo.

Please send all your work to me on Showbie. I’m looking forward to seeing what you do.

Friday 5th February 2021

AM Session 1: Maths

L.O. To solve word problems involving percentages.

Today in maths you’ll be using your skills to solve word problems involving percentages. It’s a chance to apply your percentage skills which you’ve worked on this week, as well as keep your skills of answering word problems polished too. I know sometimes the fact that you have words to read in maths rather than just calculations to solve can throw some of you, so it’s a chance to slow down, be patient, locate the information needed and work methodically through to an answer.

There are 3 layers of challenge in the worksheet below starting with a 1 star challenge and building up to a 3 star challenge. Remember that challenge by choice means you are honest about where you need to start, how many to complete in each level of challenge and where you end. I would rather you do less and challenge yourself more,

than do lots of easy ones. You are active learners and part of this is making decisions about your level of challenge. Be proud of yourself by the end of it knowing you’ve given your best!

Sometimes we might make them without realising and sometimes we might choose to make mistakes on purpose. Watch the videos below. If you are having trouble seeing these, go to the tutorial section and I have collated them together for you so you don’t need access to Youtube.

After watching this video, you may be concerned about a Bible reference which says that the wages of sin is death. This isn’t what you think! Watch the next short video below to help you understand even more.

Finally, watch this video by Father Rob Galea and he will help you to understand more about sin.

AM Session 1: Maths

L.O. To read and interpret timetables.

Our learning today is all about timetables. We will be looking at train and bus timetables in particular. This could be important learning for life, when you need to be somewhere on time in the future. Make sure you watch the tutorial and go through some short tasks with me before starting the worksheet. I think that most people will be able to tackle the two-star work. Lots of you should be confident enough to do the three-star worksheet. Answers are included on the last page of the document.

Monday 18th January 2021

Good morning Year 6. I hope you’ve had a great week and plenty of rest. You made me so proud last week, so much so that I have started the Shout Out page to tell everyone about it. If you make it onto the Shout Out page, you’ll get a dip in my teacher bucket when we get back to school plus 50 house points to bank too!

On your first tutorial for this week, I have given you a few helpful tips at the beginning to point out some things that will make your home learning even easier and help you make the very best progress you can. Please listen carefully and I hope this helps.

Thank you for all the emojis last week to my question about whether you would like a change from War Horse this week and have a funny stimulus for English instead. I received hundreds of emojis to indicate your choice! War Horse is fantastic and I will put it on the website so that anyone who wants to listen to the rest of the story can do, but we are ready for a change in mood so I hope you enjoy this week.

Here are some songs for your home worship this week. The first song is really upbeat and will make you feel energised with your worship. The second song is in case you need something a little less energetic and something a little more peaceful. The third song is Siyahamba which reminds me of Miss Miliojevic and our assemblies. Please pray this week for the time that we are reunited, not just as a class, but as a whole school so that we can worship together. I miss hearing the whole school singing.

I have also put a link to another singing tutorial for anyone who enjoys singing lessons. Thanks to the children who told me they had used this link and enjoyed it. Here is the next lesson for you from the Diocese of Leeds Music . This lesson is all about pitch and tempo.

Here is your suggested timetable for this week and don’t forget you can download it by clicking on the button below too.

AM Session 1: Maths

L.O. To round numbers to make estimates.

Todays maths lesson is addressing a gap in skills from last week. Do you remember when we were calculating and I said that it was good to make an estimate first so that you have an idea about what your answer is going to be? Well this definitely needs practise, so watch my tutorial and join in the tasks through the tutorial. Then you can have a go at the worksheets.

Remember, I’m not looking for correct answers today. I’m just looking for estimates. There is a great speed round task for you which makes you not focus on working out the answers but focus on rounding and then estimating.

Click here for maths speed round estimating task.

Click here for teacher tutorial for maths today.

AM Session 2: English

L.O. To revise punctuating speech.

This week, we are going to be using a new stimulus for a change in theme. I think some humour is needed so please enjoy watching the following Pixar cartoon, Birds on a Wire, which we will use for a writing stimulus for the next few days. It’s hilarious! I’ve watched it many times and I still can’t stop laughing at it! Please watch the tutorial I have prepared for you which will guide you through the lesson and tasks for today.

Click here for punctuating speech worksheet for Monday 18th. Click here to watch teacher tutorial for English today.

If we are punctuating speech, we can’t revise this without the help of a song, so here is your favourite punctuating speech song to sing along to! I apologise to you in advance parents who may be learning alongside their child, as this song is very catchy and you’ll be singing it in your head until the end of lockdown at least!

PM Session 1: Guided Reading

For this lesson you have a reading comprehension to complete. There are 3 layers of difficulty for you to choose. I know you are all capable of at least the two star challenge, and if we were together in school, you would definitely have the 3 star challenge. See how you feel and choose the right challenge for you.

Please make a list of subject specific words first and RAG rate them to show your understanding. You know what this means as you’ve done it plenty of times in school. Any words you are not familiar with, you will need to look them up in a dictionary and learn the meanings please.

PM Session 2: Art

L.O. To learn about foreground, midground and background in landscapes.

To end the first day of the week, I thought you would like to complete an art lesson. I was really impressed with your art last week where you worked on your perspective by drawing more complex mountains. To support this further, I thought that you would benefit from learning about foreground. middle ground and background when drawing landscapes. Please watch the tutorials below and then try to draw a landscape with 3 clear areas in it: foreground, midground and background.

Start with this very short tutorial which will help you to understand foreground, middle ground and background.

Then watch this next tutorial which starts to build on these ideas and gives you more detail. Just listen to this one as he draws with coloured whiteboard pens which you probably don’t have at home. It’s useful to listen to it as he explains more about how to add things into each section of the landscape.

Now watch this video below which is moving your knowledge on further to landscapes which are more realistic.

Finally, try to draw this landscape using what you have learnt. You can complete it with pencil or colours; it’s up to you. The important thing is that I can clearly see in your picture a foreground, middle ground and background.

Please send all your work to me on Showbie. I’m looking forward to seeing what you do.

Tuesday 19th January 2021

AM Session 1: Maths

L.O. To use estimates to check if answers are reasonable.

Today’s lesson you will use your developing skill of estimating to check if given answers to calculations are reasonable.  To help you with this, watch the tutorial which I have prepared for you and complete the tasks at each stage of the tutorial. You will then you have a worksheet to try too. Challenge yourself by choice moving forwards or backwards where needed to find what level of challenge feels right for you! You don’t have to complete both sets of work, just complete around 8 of your choice.

Click here to watch the teacher tutorial for maths.   Click here for using estimates worksheet – Tuesday.

AM Session 2: English

L.O. To write dialogue between characters.

Today you will use our blue feathered friends to write dialogue between characters. This is your chance to show that you can set out dialogue between characters, which builds on what you did yesterday as you just wrote what each character said individually. You are basically writing a conversation so you will go backward and forwards between characters talking.

Please take part in my tutorial first. Join in with all the activities during the tutorial and then complete the task at the end. All the information is in the tutorial so you just need to click the black button below and off you go!

Click here for Tuesday English worksheet.

PM Session 1: RE

L.O. To know why we make the sign of the cross.

Today, we will remind ourselves of the reasons why we make the sign of the cross. Listen carefully to Father Rob Galea in the video below and he will tell you 5 reasons why we do this.

Then you can decorate the cross with images of things you would like to pray for this week, and around your cross, make 5 bullet points with the reasons that you hear in the video. I have attached a template below for the cross or you can draw your own.

After this, reflect on the reasons why you make the sign of the cross as you pray each day. Try to become more aware of what you are doing and why you’re doing it, and this will help you on your faith journey.

Click here for a cross template.

PM Session 2: PE

L.O. To keep fit and active.

Please follow the tutorial with Joe Wicks for today to keep yourself fit and active. If you decide to go on a walk or do something in the garden instead, that’s fine too. It’s just time to take a break from computers and sitting still, and get moving. The tutorial says 15th January below but the link will take you to YouTube where you can do Joe’s session from today if you prefer. It’s up to you!

AM Session 2: English

L.O. To use semi-colons.

Today’s English lesson is a chance for you to revisit how to use semi-colons and grow in confidence so that you can use them effectively moving forward.

As requested, we will be using funny clips as a stimulus for writing for a nice change from our war topic, so please enjoy the video below first about Bernard the Polar Bear at the Gym!

Once you have watched the video, please watch the tutorial I have prepared for you. Make sure you have a pen and paper to hand as you will need to join in throughout the tutorial. Please send all your work from the tutorial through to me plus the completed worksheet below. There is not worksheet today. All the details are within the tutorial.

PM Session 1: Science

L.O. To distinguish organisms that have similar characteristics.

Today your task is to create a flow chart classification key so that you can sort the plant pictures below by their features and characteristics. The example from last week is below to remind you.

A classification key flow chart uses Yes/No questions to sort the organisms. It is your job today to design one of these. Use the example for ideas about how to set your work out.

Please watch the tutorial first for more details about how to do this and how to construct good scientific questions. It can be difficult when the species are very similar. There are nine plants to sort and these should appear at the bottom of the flow chart. For fast finishers and serious scientists, click on the buttons to find two choices of extension activities, where we are sorting mammals and birds. Make your classification key clear and eye-catching!

PM Session 2: French

L.O. To learn to say farm animals.

This week’s French is building on last week when you started to learn about animals. This week you will focus on farm animals and will learn to recognise, say French farm animal names.

Watch the tutorial with Alexa below at least twice and practise saying the words. Then you can play a game of battleships to practise using your knowledge of numbers which you learnt in school, plus your new knowledge with French animals. I have also given you a word mat which is useful to have close by too so you can practise spelling the animals. Have fun!

PM Session 1: Music

L.O. To identify names and the sounds of instruments in the string section of an orchestra.

For today’s music lesson, I would like you to explore the website below and the instruments section on the Dallas Symphony kids section of their website.

It’s a really fantastic website where you’ll be able to listen to all the instruments in an orchestra, see images of them, get background information about how they are played and listen to the sound of them too. You can hear the instruments being played solo and in a piece of music. I have also given you another resource about instruments and you can explore this to find out more information about string instruments too. See the buttons below for these.

This week, please focus on the string section. By the end of your lesson, you should be able to name a variety instruments in the string section, know how you play them, the sounds they make and identify them being played in a piece of music.

PM Session 2: Art

L.O. To add perspective to art using understanding of 1 point perspective.

This is a really good tutorial to support your understanding of perspective with this idea of 1 point perspective. Today you will not produce a final piece of art work, but you will sketch and play about with this idea of 1 point perspective. Please watch the tutorial below and send your sketches to me. I recommend that you stick to what he does in the tutorial to start with, and then you could play around with your own ideas afterwards.

Please send all your work to me on Showbie. Enjoy your art!

AM Session 1: Maths

L.O. To choose efficient methods for division.

Today in maths you’ll be building on the skills you learnt last week when you were looking at efficient methods to multiply. If you remember, we looked at lots of different multiplication questions and you had to decide which method was the most efficient for each calculation and justify your answers.

Today, I have prepared a tutorial for you so we can do this together again but looking at division instead. Please click on the black button below which will take you straight to my tutorial. There is NO worksheet today as all the calculations you need to do are built into the tutorial with a slide at the end which shows you the calculations you need to complete on your own for your main independent task.

AM Session 2: English

L.O. To maintain high standards of reading comprehension skills.

So many of you sent messages last week saying you had enjoyed the Reading Eggs task so this will be a regular Friday activity for now. I have set you a new task for today so please complete it. Make sure you spend plenty of time on the word level parts of the lessons first ot really build your knowledge of vocabulary and the word groups, for example, noun, adjective, verbs, etc.

I will be able to see when you’ve completed this task so there is no need to send a message on Showbie to say it’s completed. Enjoy your reading task for today!

PM Session 1: Spellings & Word/Sentence level work

For today’s spelling tests, I have prepared a tutorial to talk you through the spellings, plus we will look at the meaning of your words for next week. Mrs Powell will talk you through and model the full lesson so please join in. It would be great if you could send your ideas or even film your routines so I can see how you get on.  Enjoy!

Home Learning Week 2 – W/C 11th January 2021

I can’t tell you how proud I am of you all for getting busy at home last week and proving that you can still make progress even when you’re not in school. You’re showing that an excellent attitude and work ethic makes all the difference, and this is just what we need to see from you in your last year at primary school as you’re preparing for independence in Year 7.

Please check your Showbie messages from me by 9am each morning and we’ll have our wellbeing check-ins to kick start the day. Then try to follow the timetable and give yourself planned breaks like we would have in school! I have planned busy mornings and lots of your favourite activities for the afternoons. This week you have extra art lessons as so many of you say how this helps you to feel relaxed. I have also included extra language lessons too as we have have made so much progress recently in this area and I don’t want those skills getting rusty!

Try your very best and always respond to any next step challenges you are given as these are the opportunities to either revisit something that needs polishing up or they can give you an extra challenge if needed.

Have a good week and remember all the staff in Y6 are super proud of you! Mrs Prestwich, Mrs Riordan, Ms Crolla and I are all at the end of a message should you need us.

Home Worship

Here are some songs of worship to inspire your hearts and minds and feel the presence of God in your homes and in your learning this week. Sing along at home and enjoy. I have included a short prayer for you to say daily too in addition to your usual prayers. If anyone would like to write a prayer for us to use next week, please  send it to me on Showbie.

Dear Lord,

Thank you so much for your presence in our lives. Thank you for the blessings You have given us in our families, teachers and friends! Also, thank you for the opportunity to continue to learn, even though we may not be able to be in the classroom. Amen.

Suggested Timetable

Here is your suggested timetable for week 2 commencing 11th January 2021.

Click here for a downloadable version of the suggested timetable.

As well as the timetable of lessons, each week I will now also post a singing tutorial put together by the Diocese of Leeds Music for any children who are interested. This tutorial is not timetabled so is totally optional. It’s up to you if you would like to participate. If you do, I’d love to hear what you think to them and whether you enjoyed it or not.

This week’s singing tutorial is all about pulse and pitch.

Monday 11th January 2021

AM Session 1: Maths

L.O. To use formal written methods to multiply by a single digit.

Last Friday you had a tutorial about choosing efficient methods and lots of you said you needed more practise on the actual written methods. So today this is what you will do. We will concentrate on multiplying by a single digit and you are building up to 4 digit numbers and maybe even some decimal numbers. Watch the tutorial I have prepared and then download the sheets below.

Remember to challenge yourself by choice so the tasks start easy and build up. Do what feels comfortable for you whilst also challenging yourself. I don’t expect you to do all the calculations on each sheet; I just want you to do how many you need to do until they feel comfortable, and then move onto the next level of challenge. Please all ensure you try the decimals sheet too as, although this says it’s a harder task, there are different levels of challenge within there for you all.

Click here to watch the teacher tutorial.

Easier task: 3 by 1 digit

Medium Task 1: 4 digit by 1 digit

Medium Task 2: 4 by 1 digit with missing digits.

This task below is a harder challenge as it involves decimals but there are different levels of challenge within in so you can all have a go. There are beginner, easy, tricky, expert, brainbox and genius levels of challenge, so something for everyone!

Harder Task 1: Multiply decimals by 1 digit

Please remember to use the answers to mark your work before you send it to me on Showbie. This means I can focus your feedback on next steps or send you help for any areas you need further support.

AM Session 2: English

L.O. To ask delving questions and reflect on how characters are feeling.

Before we start English today, I would just like to remind you that you have a spelling test every Friday. Mrs Riordan’s group and Mrs Prestwich’s group are all set up on Spelling Shed for you to access so please do 10 to 15 minutes a day practising ready for your test on Friday afternoon.

Today I would like us to revisit the Sainsbury’s Christmas Advert about football in the snow on Christmas Day 1914. This wonderfully moving advert links beautifully to our class novel of War Horse and even the point that we got to last week in chapter 4 where Joey and Trooper Warren find themselves prisoners of war. You watched this video on the day we had den building and, if you remember, we had our own Jim and Otto and a little battle of our own around our dens that you built.

To start off today’s lesson, watch the Sainsbury Christmas advert below and then go to my tutorial for the next details of your task. You will ask your delving questions, do hot seating in role as the characters to answer the questions, and then collect a bank of words/phrases to sum up the emotions experienced over time by Jim – Christmas Eve to the end of the football match. Print off the activity sheet below and it will guide you through all 3 tasks. There is also a sheet below which summarises the story told by the advert in pictures and key sentences. This would be good to have printed out and to hand for the full week of English this week.

Click here for teacher tutorial for English today.

PM Session 1: RE

L.O. To make links between Passover and beliefs about God and freedom.

Last week you completed several activities to help you learn about Passover and the symbols of the Seder Plate meal. We will build on this today. Watch my tutorial to guide you with this lesson today.

Click here for teacher tutorial for RE today.

Watch this short video first as a recap of what you learn last week and gather all your activities from last week too. These will really help you with the task for today.

Click here to watch a video for a recap so far.

Task 1: Today I would like you to ask questions to a Jewish child about Passover to find out what it means to them. Make a list of your questions and remember to try and ask delving questions rather than yes/no questions. Aim to ask at least 3 questions. Use your skills from this morning’s English lesson to help you with the delving questions.

Once you have made a list of questions, put yourself in the Jewish child’s shoes and answer the questions in detail. Try to give full explanations to show that you understand to a deep level.

Task 2: Write a prayer as if you were the Jewish child at the end of the day when they have celebrated the Seder plate meal with their families. Imagine you are him and bring in all the knowledge you have about the Passover story and the Jewish beliefs about Passover and freedom. Check out the top tips below to guide you with your prayer. If you take each top tip in turn, this will guide your prayer virtually line by line. I’m looking to see lots of key vocabulary in your prayer and ideas for these are also included in the top tips.

Click here for RE task sheet to guide you today.

PM Session 2: Art

L.O. To use shading to add perspective to art.

Last week you tried this skill with some simple mountains and the results were excellent. This week, you have a tutorial  below where the mountains are a little more detailed, so it is building on your skills and giving you a chance to develop your shading skills a little further.

Remember, you can complete the tutorial as many times as you like as your first attempt is just that! Artists practise and refine their work so have several attempts until you achieve something that you are happy with. Also, don’t try to be too neat! The shading should look a bit more edgy and sharp rather than perfectly neat and blended together.

Please send your finished art work to me on Showbie and any practise attempts you do too so I can see the learning journey to the final piece.  Enjoy your last lesson of the day!

Join me for a tutorial this morning where we will be planning a letter as Jim in the trenches. He will be writing to his wife at home from the frontline trenches. You will be able to use all your historical knowledge and your work from last week about adverbs and powerful verbs to write an emotive letter home. We will plan it today and be ready for writing tomorrow. Planning time is absolutely essential so let’s do it well together and you’re sure to be ready to write a well organised letter tomorrow!

Click here to watch the English tutorial.

PM Session 1: History/Geography

L.O. To locate places on a map and understand the Triple Entente and Triple Alliance.

We have learnt lots related to WW1 around people’s experiences, but we haven’t yet looked in detail at which countries were involved in WW1 and how so many countries came to be involved in such a war. It’s quite complicated but we are going to give it a go today. Think of it a bit like having teams and sticking up for your friends. Watch the videos below to start off with. I would recommend doing this more than once. Then have a go at the map task and see how you get on. This will build your understanding ready to try the challenge task which involves making a 2 minute clip like Dan Snow’s below.

Click here for WW1 map activity and answer sheet.

For an extra challenge, you can use your computing skills to try and make a video like Dan Snow’s (man above) but better. Can you explain a little bit about how England became involved in WW1 if it started in a different country. If you have other people in your house who want to get involved, you could make a comedy sketch like the Horrible Histories video you watched. Get creative and film yourself! Send your videos to me on Showbie so I can see how you get on.

PM Session 2: PE

L.O. To keep fit and active.

It’s time to get active and keep fit. Put your PE kits on and join Joe Wicks for a 20 minute workout. This will make you burn and sweat even though it’s only 20 minutes!

AM Session 1: Maths

L.O. To find missing angles in quadrilaterals.

Today, Ms Crolla has prepared the maths tutorial and it builds on the shape and angle work you have been doing with her in class. Please watch the tutorial and then have a go at the worksheets.

Click here to watch the maths tutorial.

Your task today involves finding missing angles in quadrilaterals. Remember that quadrilaterals are four-sided shapes. When we talk about a quadrilateral, we might be talking about a square, a rectangle, a rhombus, a kite, a parallelogram or a trapezium. Watch the tutorial for a reminder about all these shapes and use the quadrilateral shape fact sheet below to help you. Your key fact for today is that angles in quadrilaterals always add up to 360 degrees. This will help you do the calculations to find missing angles. You won’t need a protractor for this work. There are three parts to the worksheet. Everyone should do part one, most people will do part two and I’m hoping that lots of you manage part three too.

AM Session 2: English

L.O. To write a letter.

Yesterday, you planned your paragraphs, vocabulary and some of the historical content you wanted to include so you are ready to write your letter today. Watch the tutorial which I have prepared for today with some modelled writing to get you started and then away you go.

There are some letter starters to get you started if you initially struggle, so click on the button below and take a look. Usually, once you’ve got the initial opening paragraph done, you fly. I have also prepared some sentence starters to support you again if you are finding it tricky. There is also an example of a good ending as many of you often rush the ending but I’m looking for a well thought out ending today too.

It’s fine to use them – that’s what they are there for. If you do use these, please tick them off as you use them, and send it to me on Showbie so I can see what you used.

I can’t wait to see these letters coming through later today.

Click here to watch the teacher tutorial.  Click here for examples and scaffolding ideas to guide you.

PM Session 1: Science

L.O. To learn about classification.

Welcome to our new Science topic of Living Things and Classification. This is an area that you have studied at St Joseph’s in previous years and we are going to deepen our understanding of the ways we can group both animals and plants by their common characteristics in our learning from home this half term. Start by watching Ms Crolla’s video tutorial.

For your first task, you have a choice: you can either produce a poster on paper or a presentation on a computer/tablet about the different groups within the animal kingdom. Everyone will include the same eight groups from the task sheet below but you can all choose different animals as examples; pick your favourites! For more information about the task and what to include, please see the task sheet below and the video tutorial. Of course, before you start the task you will have to do some research. For more information, click on the Classifying Organisms slides that tell you about the ways you can sort out which animal species belong in which classification. Please send me your posters or presentations on Showbie.

Here is the Task Sheet:

In school, we usually introduce new scientific vocabulary at the start of each new topic. When you have time, please click on the Classification word search. Print this and find the words so that we can start to get used to how to spell and use them. It would be great if you could also RAG rate with red, amber and green colours how confident you feel about each of the words.

PM Session 2: French

L.O. To learn new French vocabulary.

We are moving on from our work on clothing, colours, materials and fashion, and starting to learn about animals now. We will start by learning simply to listen and pronounce the names of individual animals. Watch the French tutorial below at least twice and say the words aloud with Alexa as she teaches you!

AM Session 1: Maths

L.O. To find angles around a point.

Ms Crolla has prepared your maths tutorial for you today. It builds on your maths lesson from yesterday so you should be growing in confidence with this nicely. Watch the tutorial first and then have a go at the worksheets. Remember to use the answers to mark your work and then send it through on Showbie so that we can look at your progress and give you some next step challenges.

Today’s learning is moving on from yesterday’s angles work. Today you will be looking at angles around a point. It may be helpful to think of them as slices of pizza if this doesn’t make you feel too hungry! The key fact to remember today is that angles around a point always add up to 360 degrees. We will also be looking for opposite equal pairs of angles in this work and using our calculation skills. Watch the tutorial for a more detailed explanation of how angles around a point work and how we can calculate missing angles or missing pieces of the pizza. Just like yesterday, you won’t need a protractor. There are some powerpoint slides to go through for further explanation and practice before you get started on the worksheet. There are three parts to the sheet again. Challenge yourselves!

AM Session 2: English

L.O. To edit and improve writing.

Today is a chance for you to look at your writing from yesterday with fresh eyes and see if you have made any little mistakes which need editing. It’s also a chance for you to look to see if you can RAMP it up. You know what this means: Remove, Add, Move and Punctuation, Spellings/Substitute.

Watch my tutorial first and watch me RAMPING up some writing.  Then you can use the RAMPS sheet below to edit and improve your own work.

Click here for RAMPS worksheet for editing and improving your work.

PM Session 1: French

L.O. To build confidence saying and spelling French animal words.

Yesterday you watched the tutorials and had a go at pronouncing the names of animals in French. If you haven’t tried this, please complete it now. Your next step is to practise pronouncing the words two more times using the tutorial below and then have a go at a worksheet to apply your new knowledge.

There is a word search for you to complete. Please complete the second one which has more animals on. This will help you to learn to recognise the French word and translate it into English. Then you need to practise spelling the following 6 animal names: dog, cat, mouse,  spider, fish and rabbit. Ask someone in your house to test you once you’ve practised. Send your scores to me on Showbie.

Click here for the animal word mat.

Click here for pet word search.

PM Session 2: Art

L.O. To use colour to add perspective.

Today I thought it would nice to build on our art so far and try to add perspective by using colour instead of just pencil. Follow this lovely tutorial and see how you get on. Press on harder and go over areas to create darker tones. I’m looking forward to seeing how you get on with this.

AM Session 1: Maths

L.O. To choose efficient methods to multiply.

This week, we have been looking at different methods to multiply and today I would like us to focus now on choosing the best method for the calculation. Please watch the tutorial I have prepared for you and we’ll do some together and discuss the methods which could be used, and which ones are the most efficient. There is no worksheet today. All the work you need to do is included in the tutorial with a warm up, work throughout and a set of calculations at the end for you to complete.

Click here for teacher tutorial for maths.

AM Session 2: English

L.O. To work on vocabulary and comprehension skills.

This morning, your English lesson can be found on reading on Reading Eggs. I have set you a task which includes some vocabulary work, some dictionary work, some word class work (nouns/verb, etc.) and some reading comprehension skills too. Please take your time and complete this carefully.

PM Session 1: Spelling

Today you will have a spelling test based on your Spelling Shed words for this week. These are words with cian and exc spelling patterns in them. Watch my tutorial so that you can complete the spelling test without the help of an adult. All children can join in this tutorial even if the words are not your groups as it includes Burn2Learn and the practise is good for you.

If you are in Mrs Prestwich’s group, your words are the ow spellings. These have also been on Spelling Shed for a week now so you should be familiar with these.  Please join in the Burn2Learn and ask an adult to test you on your words after.

Any words which you get incorrect, you need to practise spelling 3 times and then write each word in a sentence to put it into context. Send your marked answers and corrections to me on Showbie please so I can keep a good eye on how you are progressing. Good luck and have fun.

Click here for teacher tutorial for spellings.

PM Session 2: PE

Thursday 7th January

AM Session 1: Maths

L.O. To solve multi-step word problems.

We need lots of practise with word problems so we are starting with some today. I have prepared a tutorial for you. Initially, the word problem looks quite easy but watch carefully to see if you can spot a mistake! Use your written methods from yesterday and apply them today to show careful working out too. There is a selection of challenge below, you just click on the button of your choice.

Click here for Y6 word problems – only if you’re feeling confident! Click here for word problems – medium challenge task. Click here if you are feeling wobbly. Easier challenge to help you grow!

AM Session 2: RE

L.O. To draw a Sedar plate and know what each item represents.

Yesterday you learnt about the story of Passover and today you will learn all about the Sedar plate. By the end of the lesson, you will be able to explain what a Sedar plate is and what each item on the plate represents. Watch the Youtube link below to start with.

Once you have watched the video, you can make your own Sedar Plate. Click on the buttons below for a blank plate and off you go. Try to do really good illustrations and make notes in the boxes about what the food is and what it represents.  If you want to get creative and complete this work in a different way, that’s great too – surprise me!

If you fancy a wriggle after watching the video and before you draw your own Sedar Plate, print out the matching activity. Cut out the items and meanings and ask someone at home to hide them all around the house. Complete this as a Burn2Learn so when you find a hidden clue, do 10 star jumps and then go and find another clue. You could time yourself and send your times through to me on Showbie. How long did it take for you to find all the clues? How many star jumps did you have to do in total?  Then spend a few minutes matching up the food and meaning to deepen your knowledge.

Click here for Sedar plate matching activity.

Click here for blank Sedar plate template.

PM Session 1: PE

L.O: To develop throwing and catching techniques.

Head to the video tutorial page for a PE video tutorial with Mrs Powell. Don’t worry if you don’t have some of the equipment – just go with it! Mrs Powell gives you some ideas of what you can use if you don’t have a small ball or a large ball.

These skills and techniques will help you in game scenarios such as bench ball. Send a video of your best throws and catches once you’ve had a go and practised!

PM Session 2: History

L.O. To seek out evidence to justify claims from the past.

If you need a strong army, would you feed them well or not? I’ve heard lots of statements made in class about the British army hardly having any food and that it was like dirty water or just porridge. I want you to find evidence to see if these claims are true. I will start you off with one source of evidence, but then you need to find more evidence to ensure that the source of evidence I gave you was accurate. Never accept your first source as a historian – you must delve deep and check your sources! I have attached a grid with some prompts to support your research. Try to fill in each section using bullet points and gather as much detail as you can .

Click here for a history research grid to guide you.

AM Session 2: English

L.O. To use powerful verbs to improve action.

Click here to watch your English tutorial for Friday 8th January.

On Wednesday, we looked at using adverbs to add detail to a verb. However, if you choose a fantastic powerful verb in the first place, you don’t really need to use an adverb! Of course, a mixture of powerful verbs and adverbs makes for interesting language choices and paints a vivid picture for your reader, so it’s all about balance. Today we will look at poor verb choices and how we can improve the action in the sentence by making a more powerful verb choice.

The first thing I would like you to do is to go back to Chapter 4, listen to the chapter and look at your worthy words. Did you include any powerful verbs in that list? Can you hear any to add to your worthy word list whilst you are listening to the chapter again? Send me your new worthy words!

Complete the tutorial with Mrs Keane which has been prepared for you and you’ll soon see the difference a powerful verb can have.

Task 1: Starter – identify the verb and think of a more powerful verb that would improve the action.

Starter: Powerful verb sentence worksheet PDF to print Starter: Powerful verbs worksheet to print.

Task 2: Follow the tutorial and the top tips below to create your own piece of artwork linked to the stage version of War Horse.

Read the stage directions for the scene “Joey’s Long Night”. Click here if you want to print the top tips.  Click here for an image of Joey that might inspire your own artwork.

PM Session 1: Reading

L.O: To answer questions on given texts.

Today, your reading lesson will also support you in developing your knowledge and understanding of Passover which you started to develop yesterday. Well done for completing the Seder plate activity. This reading comprehension will also support you in your understanding of the importance of the Seder plate where you will learn the significance of each item of food. Use your reading skills to complete this successfully.

The reading comprehension has 3 levels (easy, medium and difficult). Choose the stars depending on how challenged you want to be: 1 star = easy, 2 stars = medium, 3 stars = difficult.

Remember to use the answers to self assess your work before sending it to us on Showbie.

Passover: Differentiated Reading Comprehension

PM Session 2: PE

L.O: To keep our bodies and minds fit and active.

It’s important you get outside and get fresh air as well as exercise! Exercise is not only good for our bodies but also our minds. The forecast tells me that we could have snow today, so if that is the case, wrap up warm and get outside for your PE lesson and have a snowball fight or go sledging if you are able to. Or, complete an exercise tutorial from YouTube below. If the tutorial I have inserted below isn’t something you fancy, I’m sure you can find one that you would like to do.
