Whole School Closure – Tuesday 5th January 2021

Hello Year 5 and welcome back! We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. Haven’t we been lucky with the snow recently? Or some would say unlucky because of the ice!! I nearly couldn’t get out of my driveway at the weekend!

Just like in our bubble closure last half term, you will have daily video tutorials from me and regular contact on Showbie with myself and Miss Quenby. Today (Tuesday 5th January), please complete the tasks on the Homework section of our Year 5 website and any activities set on Mathletics and Reading Eggs. There should be plenty for you to do!

It might seem like a little bit of a shock to not be coming into school today and that is okay to feel like that. Do what you can and we will speak to you all very soon! Before you know it, we’ll be back in our wonderful classroom, together again!

Take care and keep smiling! We will speak to you very soon!

Miss Waite & Miss Quenby xxx

Suggested Timetable

Here is your last suggested timetable for home learning. I have planned this week carefully to make it as fun and enjoyable for you as possible! I’m very excited for Thursday. We have our very first remote World Book Day where we have our Chatterbox Session together too! You can wear a World Book Day costume as a character out of your favourite book – if you don’t want to dress up, that is fine! I know sometimes dressing up isn’t what everyone likes to do! Please don’t buy anything new just create an outfit from what you already have at home! Be creative! Our Chatterbox Session is at 2.30pm on Thursday. Make sure you are on time and ready to share your work that you do before the session.

Wednesday is your free choice afternoon where you have complete free choice on the tasks/activities you choose, the order you complete them in and how long you spend on these activities. This is not an afternoon off, but the harder you work running up to it, the more free choice you will have! On Wednesday afternoons, I won’t expect anything to be uploaded on to Showbie.

Remember we are just a message away on Showbie. If you are really stuck or need any help, drop me and Miss Quenby a message and we can help or if at any time you want to speak to us on the phone, ask and we can call.

Click here to print Year 5’s suggested timetable for this week.

Home Worship

Here is a song of worship to inspire your hearts and minds and feel the presence of God in your homes and in your learning this week. Sing along at home and enjoy. I’ve included your firm favourite agai too: This Little Light of Mine.

Second Sunday of Lent Worship

At Mass yesterday in the Gospel reading, we heard a voice from the clouds saying “This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him.” How do we listen to Jesus in our lives? And how do we respond to what we hear about Jesus? Let’s have this as our focus in worship this week. Really listen to Jesus during your prayers this week and show that God and Jesus are in your hearts through your actions this week.

Here is a special prayer for you to say this week:

Mental Health

Make sure you allow time this week to keep your mind happy and healthy. Here are some links below to support you with ideas. Consider the following:

  • Who did it affect? What was the impact of this choice?
  • How might the person this choice affected feel?
  • How did you feel after you made this choice?

Task 2: Write a prayer to ask God for forgiveness.

Hello Year 5! Welcome back! I hope you feel rested and enjoyed your half term. I imagine you all enjoyed lots of walks – I know I did! You all were incredible last half term and myself and Miss Quenby are so incredibly proud of all of you! Keep up the hard work! It might feel difficult and you might find it tricky to stay motivated but please know that is a normal feeling, try to set yourself mini goals and use a timer to help you break up your day to have regular breaks in between your lessons. Home Worship

Here is a song of worship to inspire your hearts and minds and feel the presence of God in your homes and in your learning this week. Sing along at home and enjoy.

First Sunday of Lent Worship

Yesterday, on the first Sunday of Lent, we heard about how Jesus spent 40 days and 40 nights in the desert.

Lent is a special time when we prepare for Easter. We take time in Lent to pray more, and to think about how we live our lives. This time can help us to change for the better and grow in our faith. As we grow closer to God, we also realise that we are called to put our faith into action, and to live our lives as God wants us to, loving and caring for all people and for the earth.

Here is a special prayer for you to say this week:

Mental Health

Make sure you allow time this week to keep your mind happy and healthy. Here are some links below to support you with ideas. There are so many fascinating facts around the Mayans and I can’t wait for you to enjoy learning about this topic too!

Woohoo! It’s the weekend! 5 more days of home learning and we are back to school! Have a wonderful weekend my lovely Year 5s!

Happy Half Term

Please note, for half term there is no homework. Your only homework is to enjoy family time, switch off, get out in the fresh air, enjoy reading and do anything else that you enjoy! You all deserve this rest so much after your fantastic efforts and attitude to your home learning over the past 6 weeks!! All I ask is that you are very good for your family at home. Our Mums and Dads don’t get as much time off as they’d like so why not plan something nice for your parents or family at home? I’m sure Mums would like peace and quiet or a lovely long sleep with breakfast in bed and I’m sure Dads will enjoy quiet time too! Look after each other and stay safe. We’ll ‘see’ and speak to you all very soon!

Love from Miss Waite and Miss Quenby xx

Week 6: W/C 8th February 2021

Hello superstars!! We are now in our last week before half term! Who’s excited? You have all worked so so hard so keep going!! You are nearly there now and then can enjoy a well earned rest. I’d firstly like to say how proud Miss Quenby and I are of you. You all behaved and participated excellently in our first Chatterbox Session and we are so excited for our next one on Tuesday!!

You all continue to amaze us with your hard work, commitment and dedication to your learning. It’s not easy staying so motivated and committed but you guys are making it look easy!! Last week was Children’s Mental Health week but this week we are going to continue a focus with that to make sure that you continue to speak about how you feel, do things that you enjoy and Express Yourself! I saw lots of you enjoy some of the activities from the activity grid from last week so well done!!

This week, we will begin to prepare for Lent as this begins in half term so we have a special themed RE afternoon on Thursday linked to Lent and appreciating God’s world. This also includes a nature walk for you all. I wanted to include this because I know how much more reliant we are becoming on using and looking at screens throughout the day. Begin to think about what your Lenten promise might be as we are going to make these on Thursday.

Have a wonderful week guys!! Remember, we are just a message away on Showbie if you need us!

Love from Miss Waite and Miss Quenby xxx

Here are some more pictures to make you smile!

Suggested Timetable

Here is your suggested timetable for this week.  Remember, this suggested timetable is a guide for you which I hope will help you to organise your time and feel like you know what you’re doing and when.

We also have our Chatterbox Session on Zoom at 2.15pm on Tuesday. Make sure you are on time and ready to share your work that you do before the session!

Remember we are just a message away on Showbie. If you are really stuck or need any help, drop me and Miss Quenby a message and we can help or if at any time you want to speak to us on the phone, ask and we can call.

Click here to print your suggested timetable for Week 6.

Home Worship

Here are some songs of worship to inspire your hearts and minds and feel the presence of God in your homes and in your learning this week. Sing along at home and enjoy. I have included a short prayer for you to say daily too in addition to your usual prayers. So many of you told me how much you liked ‘This Little Light of Mine’ for worship at the beginning of half term, so here it is again!

Sunday Gospel Reflection

This week, I would also like you to watch the YouTube video below about Sunday’s Gospel. This is a child friendly video for you to understand the Gospel reading from Mass yesterday. In this video we hear about Jesus healing his friend Simon Peter’s mother-in-law. Many others then come to be healed by Jesus. Although he ministered late into the evening, Jesus still got up early and went to a lonely place to pray. You will also hear Greg in the video explain the importance of finding quiet time every day to pray.

Prayers

Find 5 minutes each day this week to pray, listen and talk to God. You might want to say your own prayer or you could say this prayer below.

Week 5: W/C 1st February 2021

Hello Year 5! Pinch, punch, first of the month! Can you believe we are in February? Did you feel like January lasted a long time or do you feel it went quickly? I’ve heard some people say January felt like it seemed to go on for a year but it went quite quickly for me.

Well done to all of you for your continued commitment and dedication to your home learning. I can’t tell you how proud I am of every single one of you. I really am so excited to get back in the classroom with you when we are able to. We are going to have so much fun when we’re back together so let’s hold on to that to keep us going!

I know how much all of you enjoyed the new ‘free choice afternoon’ last week and it was lovely to hear about what you all got up to. It seems that so many of you are loving your Art lessons. Some of you feel like you are improving in Art, some of you enjoy that it makes you feel relaxed and some of you loved it before! I’m going to keep Art on Monday for this week because I know some of you love to start the week with Art but next week, before half term, we will finish with Art on the Friday!

This week, it is Children’s Mental Health Week. The theme of this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week is Express Yourself. Expressing yourself is about finding ways to share feelings, thoughts, or ideas, through creativity. This could be through art, music, writing and poetry, dance and drama, photography and film, and doing activities that make you feel good. During your free afternoon session this week, you may like to choose some of the activities from the suggested grid over on the main Home Learning page. It looks like this:

I’m very excited to say that we have our very first Chatterbox Session this week too! I spoke to so many of you last week and I know that you are all very excited for this. It is optional but I would love for you all to join. It will be a chance to see and speak to your friends…to have a chat and a natter (which I know a lot of you love to do!). If you join and feel shy, then don’t worry, it will be okay. Miss Quenby and I will be there to support you through it the whole time. On the day, make sure to watch your Chatterbox Session video tutorial that will run through the top tips and our focus for the session, including the task you need to complete before you join.

Keep up the hard work guys! You are all doing so incredibly well! Remember that we are just a message away on Showbie and I can ring you if you need me!

Have a super week!

Love from Miss Waite & Miss Quenby xxx

Here are some more pictures for you! 🙂

Suggested Timetable

Here is your suggested timetable for this week.  Remember, this suggested timetable is a guide for you which I hope will help you to organise your time and feel like you know what you’re doing and when. Remember on Wednesday, you have your free choice afternoon where you have complete free choice on the tasks/activities you choose, the order you complete them in and how long you spend on these activities. This is not an afternoon off, but the harder you work running up to it, the more free choice you will have! On Wednesday afternoons, I won’t expect anything to be uploaded on to Showbie. We also have our Chatterbox Session on Zoom at 2.15pm on Friday. Make sure you are on time and ready to share what you find during your task.

Remember we are just a message away on Showbie. If you are really stuck or need any help, drop me and Miss Quenby a message and we can help or if at any time you want to speak to us on the phone, ask and we can call.

Click here to print the suggested timetable.

Home Worship

Here are some songs of worship to inspire your hearts and minds and feel the presence of God in your homes and in your learning this week. Sing along at home and enjoy. I have included a short prayer for you to say daily too in addition to your usual prayers. If you would like to write a prayer for next week, please send it to me on Showbie. Thank you to Isabella and Julia for their beautiful prayers for our home worship this week.

Join in with the action during our first worship song and then celebrate YOU! in the second song! This one will probably remind you of school and our assemblies!

Week 4: W/C 25th January 2021

Wow Year 5! You all continue to amaze me with your hard work, fantastic attitude to learning and independence! It has been so lovely to speak with some of you again this week, to hear your voices and hear how you’re getting on. I do miss your smiling faces and speaking to you all very much so I hope you like getting phone calls from me and Miss Quenby too. We hope you had a lovely rest over the weekend!

Here is a special message from Miss Milivojevic for you to watch.

Last week, I was really proud of you all for your efforts in English! You all came up with such imaginative and creative ideas for personification and then applied these to your writing on Friday. I really loved reading your writing. Well done! I would love to know what you are enjoying the most and what you would like more of. I know that some of you have really enjoyed the cartoon landscape drawings so I have listened and this week, for Art, you are going to be drawing rain forest animals building on your learning in Geography last week. If there is something you have enjoyed and would like to see more of, let me know or if there’s something you’d like to do in any subject that we haven’t done yet, let me know that too! This is your education and your learning time so get involved!

I was also very pleased to see so many fantastic predictions in Science! Make sure you keep your container somewhere safe. Since Thursday, I have been checking mine each day and so far, it’s a slow burner. I think we are all going to have be very patient! Do let me know if something happens though. This week in Science, we will see if our predictions were correct and we will continue to develop our scientific enquiry skills!

Please check your messages on Showbie at 9am which is around the time we would have completed our morning register and check in if we were in school. I am trying to think of creative ways for our check ins so if you have any ideas, please let me know! This is also a reminder to continue to check your next step challenges and bricks. You are all doing so well at completing these so keep up the hard work!!

Remember that we are just at the end of a message on Showbie if you need us! Have a super week!

Love from Miss Waite & Miss Quenby xx

I hope you enjoyed our pictures last week…so here are some more!

Suggested Timetable

Here is your suggested timetable for this week.  Remember, this suggested timetable is a guide for you which I hope will help you to organise your time and feel like you know what you’re doing and when. There is an addition to our timetable where you now have a free choice afternoon on a Wednesday. This means you have complete free choice on the tasks/activities you choose, the order you complete them in and how long you spend on these activities. I will give you suggestions in the timetable but this could be finishing off time, Mathletics, Reading Eggs, or more creative, fun tasks such as baking, getting outside for a long walk, crafting – anything you want! It’s a free choice afternoon!

Click here to print the suggested timetable for this week.

L.O: To understand dynamics in music.

Head to the video tutorial page to join me for your music lesson today. I enjoyed planning this lesson for you! I hope you enjoy it too! Click here to go straight to Year 5’s video tutorial page.

Dynamics can make the listener feel different emotions. Musicians will change whether they play a part quietly or loudly depending on how they want the listener to feel.

On a musical score you might see Italian or German words used to describe dynamics:

Here a few examples:

  • Pianissimo means ‘very quiet’.

  • Forte means ‘loud’.

  • Crescendo means ‘getting gradually louder’.

Task 1: Theory: understanding musical terms

Complete the worksheet. Consider the dynamics in things we hear each day.

Click here for your Music worksheet for today.

Task 2: Make noise! Using instruments, body percussion or your voice, show me the different dynamics!

Make your own shaker with an empty bottle and rice/pasta. Use an instrument in your house. Use your body (stamping/clapping) or your voice. Show me the following dynamics:

  • forte
  • piano
  • pianissimo
  • fortissimo
  • crescendo
  • diminuendo

Task 3 Practical: What do you imagine?

Create a piece of artwork or a dance to show what the Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky makes you imagine. For example, the Waltz played by the harp. This might make you imagine fairy tales, mysteries.. or flowers floating in the air.

You must reflect the dynamics through your artwork or dance – examples are given to you on the video tutorial.

Explain how your artwork represents the different dynamics of the music.

Week 3 – W/C 18th January 2021

You all continue to make us so proud and I have been astounded by all of your hard work, your fantastic attitude to learning and it has been so lovely to speak to so many of you on the phone too! I look forward to speaking with more of you this week! I know that it’s not just me and Miss Quenby that are proud too – your parents and family will be super proud of you as well! Miss Milivojevic has heard about how hard you’re all working too and every time I tell her about you all, she is super impressed and beams with pride!

Please check your Showbie messages from me by 9am each morning and we’ll have our wellbeing check-ins to kick start the day. Then try to follow the timetable and give yourself planned breaks like we would have in school! I hope you all enjoyed last week’s activities. I know so many of you enjoyed the Art lesson we had on Monday, so I’ve decided to give you all another Art lesson. So many of you find these really relaxing and enjoyable whilst you also learn new Art skills. This week, you’ll be applying skills we have previously learnt in school together. We will be moving on to reading Chapter 3 together this week which will then be the stimulus for our English lessons for the full week.

You have all been very prompt at responding to your next step challenges which has been fantastic! Try to make this your first job after your well-being check in. These are opportunities to either revisit something that needs polishing up or they can give you an extra challenge if needed. I hope you find the stars and bricks useful!

Remember that we are just at the end of a message on Showbie if you need us! Have a super week!

Love from Miss Waite & Miss Quenby xxx

Here are some pictures that we thought might make you smile:

Suggested Timetable

Here is your suggested timetable for this week.  Remember, this suggested timetable is a guide for you which I hope will help you to organise your time and feel like you know what you’re doing and when. If there is a longer task in one session, you will have a much shorter task in another session that day. As before, always watch the video tutorials first before you start any work/task because the tutorials will help you!

Remember we are just a message away on Showbie. If you are really stuck or need any help, drop me and Miss Quenby a message and we can help or if at any time you want to speak to us on the phone, ask and we can call.

PM Session 2: French

L.O: To become confident using new vocabulary. (Vegetables)

In school, we always spend time learning to pronounce new words that we learn in French. For today’s French lesson, I would like you to learn the vegetables in French and become confident saying these words. Follow the YouTube tutorial below to help you. Think of ways that can help you to pronounce the words too, just like we have done before in school. I have given you 2 YouTube videos to choose from or, use both!

Task 1: Send me a video or a voice note on Showbie to show me how you pronounce and say the words.

Task 2: Create a poster to help you remember vegetables in French. Include the word in English, the word in French, something to help you remember how to pronounce the word and a picture/illustration to help you remember. Do this for at least 8 vegetables.

Suggested Timetable

Here is your suggested timetable for this week (Wednesday-Friday). I hope you all had a good day yesterday. It was lovely to hear from so many of you!! Remember, this suggested timetable is a guide for you which I hope will help you to organise your time and feel like you know what you’re doing and when. Your feedback after our bubble closure showed that you find these useful. I have listened to your feedback too and have tried to make sure that you don’t have too much in one day.

AM Session 2: English

Our class novel this half term is “The Explorer” by Katherine Rundell which is set in the Amazon Rainforest. This book has been the inspiration for our class topic this half term: Explorers! All of our English lessons, both reading and writing, will be based on our class novel.

L.O: To predict.

We begin our new class text today – The Explorer. Before we start reading any book, it is important that we use our imagination and predict what we think the story is going to be about, what the plot might be (so what happens in the story) and anything else we think might be important in the story. To predict these things, we use the front cover and the blurb. Head to the video tutorial page so that we can complete this lesson together. The task for you to complete is below. Video Tutorials

Click on the front cover and blurb PDF first so that you can look at them in detail before making your predictions. We can do this together on my video tutorial though!

Now, I’d like you to reflect on 3 people in your own life who are inspirational to you and write clear and detailed explanations as to why they are inspirational. Use your Art skills and draw the person in the star and write their name. This person can be someone in your family, a celebrity, someone you know or perhaps someone is famous or no longer alive. Use the star templates (cut them out) or draw your own stars and then follow the top tips and my video tutorial to complete the task. Take a look at the bad example and good example as a guide to help you!

Head to the video tutorial page to watch your White Rose Maths video tutorial and then complete your task below. Video Tutorials Maths Worksheet 7th January 2021 ANSWERS

AM Session 2: English

L.O: To give opinions about a text.

For today’s lesson, you need to read Chapter 1 of our class text first. You will find a PDF document below (red button) that you can print or follow on the screen. I am going to read part of the book with you on our video tutorial so you can sit back, relax and enjoy or, you can follow the text whilst I’m reading or you can read the text yourself. Here are your top tips:

Geography Worksheet: Name and locate countries of South America

If you find locating the countries quite easy, challenge yourself further and identify the capital cities of each country and label the surrounding oceans.

Extra challenge: how many countries in South America can you remember? Name as many as you can in a certain time. 30 seconds, 1 minute….can you improve your score each time?

Here is a map with the answers on: no peeking though!

Map of South America – labelled

PM Session 2: Geography (Reading Comprehension)

If you all think back to our assessments last half term, there was a common theme and it was ‘what does genre mean’ so today we are going to learn just that! Once we start, you will realise that is actually a simple term that you probably know about already but just haven’t used this word. Head to the video tutorial page first so that we can start this lesson together. Download the PDF worksheet below first so that you can join in!  Video Tutorials Friday 8th – English Lesson Task 1 & 2 PDF worksheet

Task 1: Make connections

Think about music – what different types of music do you know? Write them down! E.g. classical music

Task 2: Genres in fiction

Watch the YouTube video below first and then complete the worksheet to show that you understand the term ‘genre’.

Fancy a challenge? Categorise the books in your house into their different genres. You may be able to use the internet to help you identify what type of genre the book is but I am sure you will be able to figure it out once you have developed your understanding first!

Need another challenge? Create an informative poster or leaflet all about the different genres in fiction.

PM Session 1: Science

L.O: To understand how materials will dissolve to form a solution.

Head over to the tutorials page to complete this Science lesson together. There are 3 parts to this lesson. For the last part of this lesson, you will need cups of water, salt and a spoon! Video Tutorials

Download the worksheet below which has a range of statements. You need to decide whether they are true or false, using your own experiences and your previous knowledge and understanding. You can complete this before watching the video tutorial or with me on the video tutorial. There will be time to pause and complete before you get the answers. No sneaking before you complete it though! This will show you what you already know about dissolving.

Task 2: Word definitions

Match up the word cards to their definitions – this is once more using your own knowledge already. See how many you get correct! Green cards are the words and the red cards are the definitions. Download the editable version if you just want to move them around to match or print the PDF version so that you can draw lines to match or cut them out and match. You could even turn this into a Burn2Learn game. Cut up the cards and ask an adult to hide them for you! You have 1 minute to find all the cards and match them!
